how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

trying to find why i'm running lean. code 44.

o2 sensor is brand new(8months old-less than 300 miles on it)
iac is brand new
tps is set to .54
new coolent temp sensor
new cold start switch
k&n air filter setup
new spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor
new radiator
new battery
maf seems to be alright
new fuel filter
done tons of fuel injector cleaner over the course of trips to the gas pump.

car has trouble to idle at cold starts
tap the gas pedal to keep it going till it will idle around 800 and warm up and be ok.

i just installed the coolent temp and cold start switch.

now car sounds like it skipping or misfiring.

heard two pops, like plastic bags filled with air pop.

parked the car and had to go to work.

any ideas guys?

my guess a couple injectors are clogged.

i don't know my fuel pressure yet.

car stumbles and i'm not sure what to do next besides repalce my injectors.

but then again can my fuel pump be semi clogged? letting just enough fuel through to keep it running? and how can you tell?
----------
i should mention people said they tjought it was misfiring before i did the new plugs wires etc.... so that leads me to believe and injector or two isn't firing.

Re: how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

There is not set way to tell if a fuel pump is going to die. If your lucky what can happen is, you start your car up and it runs for about a second or two and then it dies then you try to start your car up again and it runs fine. That recently happened to me and this kept on happening for about 3 days and then my pump didnt start at all.

With your problem check your fuel pump regulator.

Re: how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

Also there is a chance that you have a leak at the exhaust manifold . Allowing in extra air into the exhast before the O2 .... thus saying it's a lean mixture. do you find that the car is running pig rich ... gas milage suffering since this has happened ?

The screen on the pump could get clogged if u have dirt in the tank...Have u changed the fuel filter??? They seem to clog up often in these cars.

Re: how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

I found that my passing gear didn't have as much grunt as it used to.
I scanned it and found that I was running a bit lean which started to retard my timing.
I checked fuel pressure static, running, and then by squeezing the return line. Squeezing the return line did not increase the fuel pressure like it should have.

Those things told me pump. I replaced the pump and now she's back to normal.

Re: how can you tell if your fuel pump is going?

ok i gotta call my mechanic and at least price out what it would cost to install a new pump.

i didnt know the computer retards your timing if your running lean.

at first i thought it was something wrong with my ecm or esc or knock sensor retarding my timing. because car ran like crap and engine was way hotter then usual which is a sign of retardation.

good one less thing to worry about at the moment.

i'm going to check my fuel pressure and then replace my regulator with an adjustable one only cuz i like to have options, and change out my injectors with a fresh set of ford racing svo injectors. i hear tehy are pretty reliable. id like to stay true with GM but not for 198 bucks per injector screw that.

thanks for the tips up to this point guys.
