new 350
well guys, i've never done anything like this before. I'm getting a 350 given to me tomoro, i think the guy said it was early 90s engine, and fuel-injected, other than that i know nothing about it yet, so my "plans" may change and are all subject to the motor really
anyway he said the motor spun a bearing and claims it can just be turned (this guys done alot fo engine swaps and rebuild so i kinda trust his judgement) anyways, if after i look at it and it looks like it really can be turned would that be okay, or is it really muuuch better to get a new/reman crank? i'm wanting to get a hotter cam, port out the heads, get bigger intake valves put in if it needs em, was looking at proform alum roller rockers...*but* they seem a lil cheaper then some of the other brands (I btw do not have tons of cash :P) are they good enough for a semi-hot daily driver, or do i need to spring for better?
CCA-K12-213-3 part# for a cam at summitracing does this look alright (assuming it fits the engine)..i'm wanting a rather hot cam, just a lil short of racing fuel, but i'm just starting learning aobut engines really, does that fit what i'm wanting (and i wanna know what *does* fit what i'm asking for, wether or not you think somthing else would be better (though i'm plenty happy to listen do your ideas...as long as you point out your suggestion somthing other than what i'm asking )
i'm planning on usuing my quadrajet if i can convert it to non-cc (posted in carb forum) (btw i want all mechnical)
anyways i'm not particulary worried about gas milage though under 10 (city..speed limit(actually about 5 under) is kinda iffy, and yes, this is my daily driver(well, will be) its got 2.73s in the back, and the 4speed auto
umm i really don have anything else i can say untill i get a look at the engine (late tomoro night so i'll probally post wednesday morning) (and me and a friend will be taking it apart friday night..(hopefully)
ment to say i could go for new pistons for higher compression, etc anything else ya'll suggest, and i've got no emissions, just visual
thanks guys

Hmm, wow, okay...First loose the 2.73 gears if you want a lumpy cam and near race performance. You will need 10 to one or higher rated pistons (compression ratio rating) to support a moderate to large cam.
Head work is a very beneficial performance mod when performed by a competent shop, and 2.02/1.60 are as big as you need in a daily, non-race engine. As for the monetary outlay for roller rockers, in this case I just don't see it. Try a set of roller tip rockers and you should be happy.
Under 10 mpg is probable if you really want the engine to rock, however a quick fun car can do much better than that and be a lot easier on the gas budget. Using a cam with less than 240 degrees duration and a 750 or smaller carb ( aftermarket) or a well prepared Q-Jet with a Performer RPM style intake will net a good power/torque with good street/daily manners. Again I would loose the current gear set for something like a 3.42 set with posi. In this case even with modified heads stock type pistons yielding less than 10:1 will be good and prevent detonation or the need for expensive fuel.
If you want big bang for the buck, build a budget 383 from a kit or even with swap meet pieces. A tame cam/compression/intake combo can net large torque numbers and tire frying power. Heck you could even get a set of 6 inch rods and make even more power!! (this is the job I would use)
To answer your question about the crank, I would (myself) have it ground undersize with a large fillet radius. This strengthens the crank and does not cause issues with longevity.
Run the numbers off the block to determine the year application and displacement of the engine you're getting. We can help you here.
ps
Oh and compression is related to cam timing so educate yourself on compression ratio vs. cylinder pressure.

"Early 90's fuel injected 350" with wiped out rod bearing smells a whole lot like "LO5 TBI" from a truck, meaning swirlport heads. Most likely not worth porting (although there is at least one Board member that argues to the contrary - but you need to keep cam lift and RPMs down). And not good with a lumpy cam.
Magnum cams are best left to the nostalgia crowd. Xtreme Energy are much better for the street.
You really need to know what you've got before you make plans such as performance upgrades, and machine work vs. buy new decisions.

"First loose the 2.73 gears if you want a lumpy cam and near race performance" Why lose the 2.73s? i know those are "highway gears" but i'm not taking this to the drag strip...i mean with those the lg4 in it could lay rubber to 45mph or so(assumming i didn't let off the gas and actually let the car move lol) and seemed to have plenty of low end power..so why not keep these for the top end? (i'm trying to learn...be patient with me LMAO)
ummm if its these "swirlport heads" would it be advisable to find a set of l98 heads? (or somthing else, but i doubt i can afford "decent" brand new heads)
well, i don't think theres anything else i can really "debate"/question till i get a look at the engine and find out what i've got

Your LG4 didn't lay rubber to 45mph.
2.73's will make a large cammed engine very soft at the bottom end. You can change those out anytime, so you might as well leave them until YOU feel you want to.
swirlport heads have the casting number 193 I believe. If those are the last 3 digits on the heads then you've got swirlies. L98's are a good choice, or some basic 305 heads with some port work would do ya.

I've got a spare set of 305 heads (lb9 i think...its been awhile) would those be decent with porting?
oh and the exhaust system is one of those stupid fake dual pipes where one pipe doesn't go thru the muffler

I suggested loosing the long gears in favor of something more accelleration orented to give you the seat of the pants rush. Gears can really wake a car up. Mine has 3.73s and really rocks to about 120mph. They are however expensive by the time you pay someone to install them, and not really necessary to building a performance engine. As for heads, I really don't know much about the OEM heads and their cost/performance potential. I will say a good pair of aluminum OEs would be nice...but again I'm not OE educated.I put the SportsmanIIs on my engine (406 sbc) and really like them, and have read that they have a lot of potential with mild port work to flow as good as heads costing twice as much.

well, didn't get the engine today cause the guy was busy, but my dad talked to him and the guy mentioned it had vortec heads ^^ ...Should i just go for a 383 stroker kit and a hot cam? work on the top end later?(when i got money again lmao)

Re: new 350
you will want to keep those heads... a little home work and they can run a decent siezed cam... and make very good power on a 350... i wouldnt do a stroker for your first build it is to involved... to many little things that can be over looked

I doubt they're Vortec heads. It probably has center bolt valve covers, which a bunch of people think means they are "Vortec".
193's is what I'm betting.
