HEI to external coil swap
Just wondering what all is involved in swapping from an HEI style distributor to an external mount regular distributor? Thanks

regular distributor
HEI IS a "regular distributor"... about as "regular" as it gets.
What are you REALLY asking?

I think he wants to change from one like this first picture to the one in the second. You know, a "regular" distributor instead of an "old" one.

Yea supervisor thats what I wanna do.. I am young at 19 but am more of a man than most(U.S. Cavalry currently in iraq).. I tried looking for a digital ignition box for HEI with no luck and Summit has a package deal for a whole new setup so I was just wondering if the swap was that hard or if i needed any harness or something along those lines in particular.. Thanks

The problem with the distributor in the second picture is that it requires an ECM to work. The ECM requires sensors for it to work (a bunch usually). This is why most performance engines that just have a carb wind up with the coil-in-cap distributor.
If you can find an easy way to make it work, a lotta people would want to know how.

Re: HEI to external coil swap
It isn't very hard at all...i recommend mallory comp 9000 and a mallory coil..it comes with instructions..i have had both for 13 years and haven' had to replace anything...no cap, button, nothing...mine isn't a daily driver but i think their products would do you very well
