Re: is my engine done?

Very unusual. I've never seen a rod break at idle. All of the ones that I've autopsied broke at high rpms when it is under the most strain and destroyed everything in it's path. The bent part attached to the piston indicates a hydrolock condition but the starter couldn't have bent the rod.
Atleast it didn't have anything to do with your changing the oil...
Have you ordered the tree-fiddy yet?

Re: is my engine done?

yeah i know, i've never seen anything like it. upon closer inspection of the piston side of the rod, there a piece of piston missing around where the wrist pin goes. the knocking sound the engine made was very similar to that condition. also when i moved the rod part on the piston back and forth it doesn't move easily. the bearings on the lower part of the rod have deep scoring marks on them. i think this was caused by a bad oiling situation.

i have not ordered the engine as of yet. i need 2-3 more weeks to pay off my bills and snap-on and to get to my target amount of money. as much as i'd like the ZZ4, i'm probably going to get the SUV 350 from scoggin dickey. instead of going all out right now i'm going to have to do things in baby steps because i still have to do the 1LE conversion on the brakes, install subframe connectors, check the trans, take care of my diff pinion leak, get the holley stealth ram injection, re-do the interior and paint her so she looks respectable. so pretty much i get her up and running and everything base lined, i'll move onto the next stage.

btw, would anyone have any use for 305 engine parts like the remaining pistons or maybe even the block? if there would be any possibility let me know and i'll post it in the classifieds.

Re: is my engine done?

Glad to see ur going with the truck motor and HSR
I don't think you'll regret that decision.
A lot of members on here run that combo and love it of course it will all depend on ur chose of cam. Are you gonna leave the cam it comes with for now and upgrade later or did you decide to get one now aswell?
Do a search you can probably find someone who has posted dyno numbers for a similar combo

Re: is my engine done?

you guys know the specs for the truck motor? the scoggin-dicky page doesn't give any specs (cam, compression, bore, stroke, etc...)

hey vette9190, how do you like those edelbrock TES headers? been thinking of them for a while.

Re: is my engine done?

I like them. Good fit took me 3 hours to do my entire exhaust install Headers cat catback. For some reason alot of guys on the boards don't like them. I'm not sure why as they look very similar to most of the other headers available for our cars.I cheated though I didn't get the ones for my car as they were smaller I got them for the z with tpi single cat setup bc they were bigger but its still direct bolt in bc I changed to bigger 3in cat.

Check gm's website for the specs on the motor should be able to get them there

Never really heared anything good about the tes headers, they have small primaries and supposedly don't flow that well, still they are better than manifolds.. if you can get them really cheap I'd say go for it, if you have to pay full price there are better headers out there. Not the best choice if you are going for performance, but better than stock if you don't really care.

I think he makes them both ways, hooker and hedmans are also available with or without AFAIK, are you looking for shorties or long tubes? I'm assuming shorties since you were asking about edelcraps..

Re: is my engine done?

I think I would tow it to a friend's house. Or put it behind the house where no one can see it. Then I would move out of that borough.

10 days isnt much time to fix it and pass inspection, affordably.

brutal, you must have some pesky neighbors!

I know alot of citys prohibit you from turning your driveway or front yard into a personal work shop, but i think this is the first time ive ever heard of it being enforced!

Jersey, I'm really tired of this state. What about a self-storage place? Not sure if they will allow a car or not, but I did see a car in one. Maybe it depends on the place.

RSpower!, i live in secaucus, NJ...a suburb. and yes, my neighbors are obnoxious A-holes. i'm surrounded by old people. god forbid if you want to do something yourself for your hobby and they don't like it. not everyone can afford to fix their car at a shop.

yeah i did here about the possibility of renting a space but i wouldn't be able to work on it there.

btw i called up scoggin-dicky last night about the vortec motor, they said i'd have to pick it up at the airport and have a forklift available because they said they can't deliver to a residence. wtf is that? how do people buy engines from these guys?

If the car is on your property I can't see how they could legally tow it.. and what would the lein be for? That's just insane.. if you want a used 89 tpi 305 just to get you by let me know.

Rules. Here you're supposed to have every vehicle registered or they'll tow, and you're only supposed to have just a few dead cars on your property, but its rarely enforced. It happened to me but safety was just a push in the garage away.

Re: is my engine done?

The same thing happened to me this summer also. I have had unregistered cars in my driveway numerous times over the years and this is the first time I got a warning. Luckily I have a garage and it just happened to be out that day. I can understand why the ordinance is there, to keep junk cars from littering the neighborhood. But come on, my car is far from junk.

Re: is my engine done?

My buddy has the same problem with his car and actually the town he lives in will ticket a car if its parked in the same spot for more then 24 hours.
I had to help him thrash to get his aunt's minivan motor swapped out so he could push his car back in the garage before they ticketed it. Of course living next to the mayor may not help.
Hope my town isn't that way got a dead 95 altima with no plate sittin in the d-way right now.

God bless ALABAMA!
No CATs, no inspections, no!
Y'all come see us.
Fix your car when you want to.
If they ticketed folks around here for non-running cars, half the population would be in jail...

Give Forward Air a call. They specialize in liftgate service. It's doable, but it'll cost ya...

Wow! There must of been NO rod clearance, causing it to get too much friction and snap. You can use your heads (high comp with a 350), cam, carb, rockers and things like that. I suggest buying a set of vortec heads or i have some spare 350 tbi heads that make tons of low end torque.

Did you build the motor yourself last time?
