The dots, indent, or arrow. In your case the dome goes highest.
Try to visualize the slug in the cylinder and how the valves come down.

Re: Piston installation questions ( which way points to the front of the block)

I think for some pistons it doesn't matter. But I'd make sure the thing is symmetrical all the way around first. I just remember reading in my books that if it had no markings then it could be installed either way. But I'd make sure first! Just make sure you dont put them in 180 degrees out (or upside down if you prefer to think of it that way).

Re: Piston installation questions ( which way points to the front of the block)

Since they're already pressed on the rods you need to watch the orientation of 2 things at the same time: piston orientation and rod orientation.

1. Piston orientation- the valve relief trench always goes towards the lifter valley (or the dome always goes towards the outside of the engine, if you prefer).

2. Look at the bearing notches in the rod's big end. They ALWAYS point towards the outside of the engine, regardless of which bank of cylinders they are installed in.

You must make sure that BOTH of these orientations are correct for each hole. This means that 4 of the piston/rod assemblies will only orient correctly for the driver's bank of cylinders and 4 will only orient correctly for the pass. side bank of cylinders.

Re: Piston installation questions ( which way points to the front of the block)

Damon has it also look at the rods thay will have extra clearance for the crank jounels close to the counter weights.
