88 GTA Fuel Pump

Anyone know how hard it is to replace the fuel pump on an 88 GTA? I am fairly mechanically inclined and want to know if this is a "do it yourself" job? Also, any idea on cost?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Re: 88 GTA Fuel Pump

It involves taking out the fuel tank..... should be around $50 - 60 from napa.

Re: 88 GTA Fuel Pump

How much work is that? Is it simply unbolting and dropping the tank to gain access? Also, I assume the fuel filter is in line in an easier place?

Thanks

If you have a fuel feed problem might want to tell us what kind of carburetor you have, etc. and what the symptoms of the problem are. Dropping the tanks may not be necessary.

Tuned Port Injection, sorry I shold have said that before. Also, when you turn the key, there is no pump sound where there used to be.

Re: 88 GTA Fuel Pump

Do you know there is a relay involved that might be the problem? That is easy to replace. Easy to test if you have a volt meter and some experience with electronics.

Changing the fuel filter is rather trivial. It is tucked up under the car near the rear wheel on the driver's side. It is a small can about the size of a soup can.

Re: 88 GTA Fuel Pump

If your doing this in a driveway on jack stands you should give yourself the better part of the day. You will need to remove most of the rear suspension and on 20+ yr. old cars bolts and nuts get rusty so be sure to have plenty of PB Buster or whatever your faviorate on hand. You will need a good length breaker bar and large mm sockets. You will also have to remove the fuel filler door. This is not a fun little job IMO..plus A half full fuel tank and be pretty heavy and difficult to handle. It would be best if the tank was near empty.
Once you have the tank out the pump and sending unit is easy to get to and replace. A new pump for a TPI isn't cheap. Good luck and work safe.

Words of wisdom. Thanks for the headsup.
