changing starter on a a 91 z28

so i need to change my starter on a 91 camara dual cat car, while uninstalling the starter i actually broke it where u unscrew the battery terminal, is this very common, starter seems very old and rusted. Thing is now im unable to drop the starter tried diff ways but it wont happen. Does the car being a dual cat car have anyhting to do with this, also it seems like the transimmision cooler line are in the way, i fugured one way to remove the starter was take the lower control arm off since i plan on lowering the car a bit anyways, but is there an easier way thanks

Do you have headers? I have heard that if you have headers they might get in the way. I also have a dual cat car and when I replaced my starter I did not have much of a problem getting the starter out. I had to wiggle it out a little, but it came out. I am not sure why it is that your engine cooler lines are in the way. Mine definitely were not.

Re: changing starter on a a 91 z28

I wanna say that I had to drop my y-pipe(s) to get my original starter out when I replaced it. After that I put in a mini starter and have never had issues removing it since. It will take a bit but it will come out.

Oh yeah, the stock peices will become brittle over the years so it is not uncommon for that stuff to break upon removal.

I don't know what to credit for this, but I have headers, with 3" exhaust and have never had to remove, or adjust anything to get the starters out. And I've had mine on and off around 40 times in the last 3 weeks. I unbolt the wiring, then the two bolts that hold the starter to the block, when it can drop down, slide it forward about 3 inches, and rotate it counter clockwise so the solenoid clears your car and bring the end of it (not the drive end) out first. Then reposition it so it's almost perpindicular to the ground, and you should be able to drop it right out.

You've probably already tried that, but I figured I would try to help!
Good luck!

Re: changing starter on a a 91 z28

well i decided to unbolt my A arm and remove the spring, i was able to slide out the starter in between the A arm where the spring goes, i was plannning on lowering the car an inch or so so better now then later while i have things off, the car is so rusted and the bolts are so seized i had to cut a few bolts and cut my shock off, finally got the starter out and replaced it, since i cut a new bolts and shocks i will replace these and all new bushings thanks for the info
