Which Fuel Pump Should I Buy?

I have an 87 Firebird with a 305 and an Edelbrock 600cfm. I need a new fuel pump and do not want to use the $20 piece o' crapola from AutoZone. Here's what Jegs says I can get for my car...

http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.%20Gasket/720/7716/10002/-1
http://www.jegs.com/i/Holley/510/12-834/10002/-1
http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.%20Gasket/720/7721/10002/-1
http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/1721/10002/-1

But all of these pumps only have one inlet and one outlet. My current bad pump has a vaccuum return, a third hose, one from the tank, one back to the tank then one to the carb.

So is there a way to make one of the above work on my car? Do I need the return? Do I just use one of these and cap off the return to the tank?

go for holley. i have had nothing but issues with numerous mr gasket products, and [IMO] i think edelbrock tries to manufacture too many things and that they dont have any "awesome" or stand out products.

holley also has great customer support, with knowledable techs, and you dont have to sit on the phone for forever.

Re: Which Fuel Pump Should I Buy?

So if I did use the Holley, or any other one with one in and one out, but no vacuum return then what do I do about the vacuum return to the tank? Is the vacuum return just an emissions control thing? If so, I have already removed all that crap so I should be able to block it off if that's the case. Or is it going to cause problems doing that?

Has anyone else dealt with this?

it could very well be emissions related. my fuel pump just has an in and out.

i would call one holley techs and ask one of them. 270-781-9741 is the tech line.

or you could ask summit, but i think holley techs would be better with it.

you could also check out aeromotive...

Re: Which Fuel Pump Should I Buy?

I put an electric one on mine that didn't need a return line, so I just used the supply and blocked off the other lines. Really, if you're not going for looks or performance gain of electric I'd just stay with stock. You shouldn't need any more than 25gph of flow at peak power, probably considerably less than that.

fast82z has a valid point. its a stock 305, not exactly a 150+ gph sucker like a fully built 383/400,etc.

25 GPH pump would support ~300 HP according to holley.

as far as reman's i would just stay away from autozone reman parts. i have had horrible luck with them.

The $20 piece o' crapola does surprisingly well.

Re: Which Fuel Pump Should I Buy?

So I have done a lot of searching, talking and typing with you folks. Here's what I have come up with. I can either...
  1. Buy a $20 piece o' crapola, hope it lasts a while considering it's probably built with cheap parts and hope the diaphragm doesn't dry up too easily (I don't drive the car a whole lot).
  2. Buy an Edelbrock, holley, etc... 80gph lower end pump and block off the fuel return line. But I have heard some people say you may experience a vapor lock while sitting in traffic on a hot day if you do that. And it gets hot enough here in Georgia that if that's so, then it would definitely happen to me. Plus the headers keep it pretty hot under the hood.
  3. Spend a lot more and go for electric, but then I would still have to block off the return line.
So is that it? I mean it seems rather odd that if you want to keep it setup the same as it was before and just replace a bad mechanical pump you have only one pump to choose from, the Airtex Master Fuel Pump Part Number: 41216. Other than that one pump, I have not found any other mechanical pumps for this car that has a fuel return. I did find a Bosch at Napa but they cancelled my order saying they aren't available any more. So that's it? One pump? Or get a different one but screw with the way it's supposed to work? Am I wrong? I just hate buying a poorly made cheap part like that. And for those of you who have blocked off the return to the tank, have you had any problems at all?

Thanks guys

Is this a factory carb'd car? VIN code H? If so, you have an electric in-tank pump along with the engine-mounted mechanical. Since that is the case, you should use a return-style mechanical pump.

The Carter M6626 is a good choice for the mechanical. It has the return line, and is rated for 120 GPH.

You said you "need" a new fuel pump, but never said why. Do you know if the in-tank electric is operating?

Since the car now has an Edelbrock carb on it, it obviously has non-factory things done to it.

Re: Which Fuel Pump Should I Buy?

I'm all done with this thread. Thanks to everyone who helped. I went back to AutoZone and got the 20 dollar pump. If it goes bad faster than others would then at least it's cheap and easy to get. I got all the parts for my fuel line but had to exchange a few things, I got the wrong hose ends. I just put the swivel hose end on my hose, that was pretty easy, although I did nick up the red cap pretty good so it won't look perfect. I had to use vise grips and a rag between them and the cap, I don't have a vise or a work bench to put one on otherwise that would have been the best. I went to Doc's Performance Parts here in Chattanooga and easily got the fitting for the pump. I got an Aeroquip FCM2108 (-6 to 5/8-18 TH'D).

Oh, and even though I said I'm all done with the thread, I will post pics of the job when I'm done, probably will be next weekend by the time I get the new hose ends.
