Re: engine will not go further than 3200rpm

What was it doing when it would only rev to 3200? did you try putting it to the floor at that time? did it backfire or pop or jerk and hesitate?
It seems that you may have sucked some crap into the fuel system somewhere when you ran out of gas, and filled it up and stirred things around. try replacing your fuel filter first.
Just my 2 cents.

You could have clogged your fuel filter running it out of gas cause all the junk in the bottom of the tank goes to the filter with the last of the gas.

yeah when it would reach 3200 it would act like it would die so i'd floor it and it just struggles to stay at 3200 and jumps from 3000 to 3200. and i went out to show my buddy what i was talkin about and now it has trouble ideling

it's pretty common. Over years crap builds up on the bottom of the tank. When you run out it's trying to get that last bit and picks up all the dirt. Also when you poor more gas it stirs it up which also pumps all the dirt.

The pump will struggle to pull the right amount of fuel. the longer it is run like that the bigger the chance of burning it out. You should be fine.

Re: engine will not go further than 3200rpm

I believe in almost every Firebird or Camaro I have picked up I notice one thing in common, at least on the TPI ones, no one seems to change the inline fuel filter that is under the car.

I just finished replacing the one on the last Firebird I picked up.

It definitely sounds like a fuel filter issue to me.
Take the time and replace it.
Your fuel pump will thank you for it.
