Stopping/slowing IDLE problem + video!! help
Hey i have a 1988 camaro rs 5 speed. I have been having this problem for a while now. Whenever i come to a stop and put my trans in neutral, my idle goes to 400-600 rpm. Then, after sitting for 10 seconds will return to my set 750-800 or so. It almost is like the harder i hit the brakes, the lower the idle gets. The reason this is such a huge problem is that it dies every other time this happens, and as you know having your car die in public sucks, and worst of all on this year the steering wheel locks if the engine dies so once i was halfway through a uturn and it died i almost flew into a car turning right on red becuase i couldn't steer.
I have a video of this happening.
heres what happens:
I drove around my block just in 1st and brought it back down to neutral and slowed to a stop. watch the rpms and the engine struggling. then after a couple seconds it goes back up.
---I am aware the video is upside down and i'm sorry i wasn't paying full attention to the camera as i was driving it was already dangerous enough.-----
If you have any questions or if i wasn't descriptive enough please ask and il reply.
Thank you!

Re: Stopping/slowing IDLE problem + video!! help
rpms will drop with the loss of vacuum which occurs with pushing the brake pedal, i noticed your oil pressure spike to above 60 at :09 secs and :30./
as for it dying i can recommend a timing check if no dash lights indicate an error
have you tried seafoam? or cleaning your TB with carb cleaner and such?

sorry to say but seafoam and carb cleaner wont fix that.
Lets go from the top...
1. Have you done a tuneup? plugs, wires, cap/rotor etc
2. How long has it been like this?
3. What did you do right beofre it started to act up?
4. Have you bothered to reset the IAC and check your TPS?
5. Have you checked your timing and set it properly???
Nail those down and if it doent come up then you gotta look deeper man. Im thinking that between the timing, TPS/IAC thing it should help
oh and when its fixed id suggest tearing up that column to get rid of the stupid lockplate, i just did mine and i like it alot better. No more random lockups incase the car dies like you mentioned
IMO the stock oil gauge is CRAP. Just cuz its reading something deosnt mean its right, the only way to get REAL readouts is to datalog it and get down the the ECM's level. oh and obviously check for vac leaks.
hope i helped
