60 degrees of timing?

last week i replaced my distributor with a msd pro billet, when i had it out i set number 1 to tdc and the mark on the balencer was at 0, now to get my car to run with out a backfire off idle the base has to be at about 30 degrees and full timing at about 60, i was thinking the ballencer spun but if it did it shouldnt have been at 0 when i set the timing, any ideas what else this could be

No, being a tooth off doesn't affect the actual timing measured with a timing light, it just means that the distributor housing is clocked differently with respect to the block.

Re: 60 degrees of timing?

Really, so if I need to clock the distributor to clear something when setting the 36 degrees with the advance locked I can just clock the housing as long as the rotor stays in the same place?

That will help me out, thanks....

Re: 60 degrees of timing?

You can install the distributor in any position at all, as long as when the engine is in #1 firing position the rotor is pointing to whatever terminal you have the #1 wire on.

Re: 60 degrees of timing?

the timing was the same with the old distributor but it would not hold time and it ran really bad so i just figured the problem was in the distributor, it was one of those msd knock offs from ebay
