finally! General motor questions

Hey guys finlly got my camaro home from the shop with my 355 and new 700r4,

When I drove the car home i started with 7 quarts of atf in the tranny starting it and rechecking it until I thought it would be ok. Tranny felt like it slipped a little under heady acceleration, not so much the tranny but it would slip until say 3k then grab hard and go. I am using a stock converter to my knowlege, same diameter anyway. I am guessing the TC still isnt full with AFT for this one gotta keep chacking the atf level in the tranny i guess.

Next question is how my timing is, I have a timing light and know how to use it but all I have used it for was my 305 tbi, unplug the advance and set it to 6 degrees. On my 355 I am guessing i unplug my vac. advance and set to around 6 degreesagain? I have a little chrome timing pointer on the motor that reads to 16 degrees i believe, Is this the correct way to set my timing or do I need an advance timing light for a carbed motor?

These are my 2 main questions, also I dont have ANY means of TCC control and my tv cable is hooked up but I am sure the geometry isnt perfect with my edelbrock 1405 carb.

ps. Would a nice set of MSD 8.5mm wires and a good msd cap rotor and coil help a lot? Im running a stock coil cap and rotor(new of course) and 8mm opti spark wires (30$ at oreillys :/ )

Thanks in advance

Re: finally! General motor questions

A 700r4 takes around 11-12 quarts from completely empty if that helps. Stock diameter doesn't mean much, still could be a high stall unless you know otherwise. More important thing is that peak timing without the vacuum advance is 36 or so. A few companies make kits to control the TCC. I used to have mine work off of the brake sensor and a manual switch, but not now that I have a TH400. I would just leave the ignition the way it is unless you go with an ignition box of some sort.

Re: finally! General motor questions

I think its a 3k stall then because you can floor it and about 3k it really grabs, when I drive home ill try to get up on the stall at a light .

As far as the timing goes will my non advance light work? I am just really confused about reading the timing with a vaccum advance, rev it up to about 3 them check the timing??

Feels like it might be missing 2nd and overdrive but tranny isnt full with atf yet, Ad I still need a lockup wireing kit.

Re: finally! General motor questions

I have a prety big cam in this motor it lopes a lot at idle in drive, no onder people use high stalls with big cams, It seems if my tc was stock it wouldnt idle.... Well, looks like I might need to buy a transmission

Re: finally! General motor questions

As far as your timing goes it depends on your cam what is best. Usually you can find preferred timing settings on your cam spec sheet.

Re: finally! General motor questions

You can use your timing light, just need either a timing tape on the balancer or make a mark yourself at the 36 degree spot and line that up with the zero degree marker when at high rpm without vacuum advance. Depending on the springs and weights in the distributor, you might not see full advance until 4000-4500rpm also. Usually it's ideal to have max timing around 2000-2500, specially if like you say there's a big cam in the motor. When you say it goes to 3000rpm and then pulls, what situation are you talking? Is it from a stop or already moving before WOT? If you're missing speeds, then it's probably gone though.

Re: finally! General motor questions

If your TV cable is too loose it would make your trans flash to a higher RPM under normal driving.

I thought that the further you pulled out the TV cable higher line pessure occoured, so a I need to tighten up my tv cable to shift at lower rpms?? I am pretty sure I installed my corvette servo in wrong and im losing 2nd and 4th gear because of it. I only get 1str and 3rd

Re: finally! General motor questions

Yes. You are supposed to push the nose all the way in and then crank the throttle to full. It is supposed to automatically set it self. Mine never work.

Hold the button down and push the nose in a couple clicks at a time and test drive. I know if it is out to far, your car will rev too high and then slam into gear no matter how slow you are trying to take off. Get the fluid level up first. Should be some random marks on your dipstick below the safe-hot zone with no identification for cold level (in park and running).

Re: finally! General motor questions

Adjusting the TV cable didn't make any difference?
