Fuel system overhaul

Replacing all my fuel lines from the hard lines all the way up to the carburetor…. Never worked with braided hose line so I wasn’t sure if I had everything I needed, and wanted to double check here first b4 I started to order parts…. Also not sure wut fuel pump to get (stock 305 with intake and Holley carb)… keep in mind that I want a nice chrome one. Anyway here and the parts this far.



2 jegs hard-line AN adapter fittings 3/8 to -6AN

Holley fuel pump (not sure if this is wut ill use) just want 3/8 inlet and outlet, it also needs to have the return vapors fuel line.

Well I think that’s about everything to deal with the fuel lines this can be my December project, and then ill work on the ignition system next…. Would like to get an msd ignition kit, just not sure wut one to get. Recommendations for that would also be appreciated. And I also need to get some recommendations for a good starter….

What do you need to know?

The size number corresponds to the line OD in 16ths of an inch - 8 AN is 1/2", 6 AN is 3/8", 5 AN is 5/16", etc.

The return line is 5/16", not 3/8", so you can't use one there.

well i can still use one of tho's AN fitting to convert the one main fuel line right? just not the the return line? or what would hapen if i just pluged the return line and dint use it?

I am not sure how you want to deign your fuel system, but most the time fuel returns are used with electric pumps.The pumps that are designed for return line are usually expensive, as is the bypass regulator. This is the best way to build a fuel system, but VERY expensive.
If I were you I would sump your factory tank. This will give you a half inch npt fuel outlet, from there you need a 1/2 npt to 8an adapter and however many feet of braided to reach your filter, I would spend about 40$ on a decent filter with an 8an inlet and outlet.
You could then hook that up to a holley blue electric, or good mechanical pump. I prefer electric for there steady pressure, but you cant go wrong either way. Either fuel pump will most likely have a 3/8npt inlet and outlet so you will need a 3/8 npt to 8an adapter.
If you use an electric pump, you will need to plumb in a regulator which will also likely have 3/8 fittings, so you will need adapters as well.If you opt to get a bypass regulator(expensive and not totally necesary) from there you would run a 6 or 8 an return line to the top of the tank.
Now all you have to do is go from the mechanical pump or regulator to your carb, so you will need a 3/8 to 8 an adapter for the regulator or pump, then the line to the carb.
I would be sure to use 8 an line, this project will be expensive, and 6 an line is just 3/8, 6 an would probably be fine, but 8 an will be ok for whatever you build in the future. A mechanical pump would also be fine, but most people opt for electric by the time they spend this kind of money on fuel line. Sunping the tank is also an important aspect of a well designed fuel system.
The way I would do this is not the only way, there are cheaper ways, more expensive ways, and better ways, but this would be a cost effective system that would be done right for a NA street car in the 11 to 13 second range.

yes, the return line is 5/16, and its a good idea to keep it.

while im not sure its the best way to do it, you can use a 5/16 OD plumbing compression fitting, you can get at the local plumbing supply or homedepot/lowes. That would be brass, maybe you can find a chrome plated one. That part would allow you to convert to a male or female thread and from there you can adapt to the an-line. The jegs piece is just a compression fitting, like the plumbing one so i dont see why it wouldnt work.

I was unaware that you could buy a performance return style fuel pump for 30$, perhaps you could enlighten me?
If I were to do a fuel system overhaul and spend about 100$ on braided line and five to ten dollars on every fitting, I am not sure I would use a 30$ pump, your stock fuel system on some of these cars (fuel injected models) uses a 3/8 steel feed line, If you are not going to buy a real good pump, why bother replacing fuel line, especially with 6 an which is equal to 3/8. I also do not see why anyone would use a return line with a mechanical pump. The best thing about a mechanical pump is that it varies pump output with engine rpm, unlike an electric pump which will heat the fuel at idle, but I am sure there is some reason, perhaps you could enlighten me on that as well.

Return style pumps are stock replacement, they're not expensive. The Carter M6626 free flows 120 gph, how much more do you need than that?

Return fuel systems are preferred (whether they use a return pump or a return regulator) because they circulate unneeded fuel back to the tank where it can cool down, instead of leaving it sitting in the lines in the engine compartment soaking up heat.

It's not a vapour line, it returns liquid fuel back to the tank. Carter M6626 would be my choice, maybe polish it if it needs to be shiny. If you you need chrome then all that's available are non-return pumps.

Ok so wut I think im going to do is run rubber hose lines to the fuel pump , and then from the fuel pump run a braided hose line to the duel fuel rail… I think that will make things a lot less complicated… but I do kindda want to kno y nobody makes a chrome fuel pump with a return line? Not that it really matters but its always nice to learn something.

The return line was a relatively late addition in the 70s to fight vapour lock problems, most cars don't have a return line.

just bought the carter M6626, found it on amazon for 13 buck plus 5 bucks shiped... so 18 bucks al togeather summit had it for 30, so i think i got a good deal....

The M6626 uses a 3/8" I.F. outlet instead of the 3/8" NPT that the holley pump above used, so you'll need a different adapter for it.

hmmm wel i cant seem to find the right I.F. fitting for the fuel pump.... i found a 3/8 I.F. to -4AN, but i need it to be 3/8 I.F. to -8AN... they have 3/8 NPT to -8AN fittings, so they should have the 3/8 I.F. to -8AN right??? i looked on yahoo, jegs, summitracing, and earls...

Ok so I’m confused still so I get the “Aeroquip FBM2108” ill still need an adapter because my braided fuel line will have to be -8AN because the inlet for the dual fuel line is -8AN… soooooooooo id need an adapter that goes from -6AN to -8AN, and all I can find is reducers… help????

I’m sry if I’m being annoying Aperion, but I cant find these answers on my own. Trust me I’ve been looking….

Why are you using a -8 inlet? You don't need anything nearly that big.

I am sure that pump and 6an line will work well for you, but I am unsure why you would spend 100 dollars on fuel line and fittings to use that pump? Although it may be an upgrade from a stock pump, it is not going to outpump stock 5/16 or especially 3/8 line. You also do not really need to run a return with this fuel system, you will see absolutely no gain with a return. it may cycle unused fuel to the tank, but with this pump it will not be heating large enough amounts of unused fuel to make any real difference.I do not mean to be negative in any way, and it sounds like you want your fuel system done RIGHT, so I am just trying to steer you in the direction that has seemed to work well for me when I want to run good on a budget. braided fuel line won't help to go faster, nor will a huge electric pump, but a decent pump with appropriatley sized line will help you in the future.6an is 3/8, if all you want is 3/8 line and a good mechanical pump just go to the hardware store and buy some hardline, for 20 bucks. It is a pain to bend, but all your connecters are as close as the hardware store, and CHEAP, it is also more reliable than braided, just not as pretty. just my two cents.

Well all the parts are here… but I for got to get the male to male fitting that goes from the -6AN fiting to the dual feed fuel line that I got…. Not sure wut size the fitting on the dual feed line is tho… kindda thought that it came with the dual feed fuel line… any help on that would be great…. Just cant seem to understand these fittings yet.. Oh well pics will come soon enough…

On another note…. Found out that the plant I work at is possible going to lay off half the pant… soooo I might not be getting the camaro done for spring after all… kindda bumbed out about that… sooo going to save a lil money now and wait to find out b4 I buy anymore parts…

Just went outside and was gonna test fit everything up… and guess wut…… the fittings on my dual feed line are way to small to even come close to fittings on the carb… I have a 4150 series Holley carb, and the jegs dual feed line part number 555-110832. Now I no it said it fit the a 4150 series b4 I decided to order it… so wuts the deal???

Do you have the inlet nuts on the fuel bowls?

idk wut a BG carb is... and yes i do belive the inlet nuts are on the fuel bowls.... this fuel line crapp is really kicking my @ss, and really making me feel like an idiot...

Anyway did I just order the wrong feed line, cuz now that I read my order confirmation it says that its for a demon carb… but I still called and talked to the tec guy for jegs on the phone b4 I order it to make sure it would fit on my street avenger… he said it would so I went ahead and got it… ?!?!? So idk wut the heck is going on…

so basicaly i have the wrong dual feed line and need to call jegs, and tell them that there tec guy told me that i had the right part picked out, and see if i can get it replaced with the right one...

ok so now im returning the first dual feed fuel line for part number 555-110822hoping thats the right part now....

Wrap some tape or some heater hose around the fuel line where it goes over your alternator. With vibration the braid is just like a file and it'll rub its way into the alternator body.

You also want to make sure it never, ever gets behind the alternator and touches your bare alternator stud.
