welded motor mounts

I have two 1989 camaros and on both, the engine mounts on the k-members are welded partially. I've searched the whole changing engine mounts thing, but i never saw anything about welded in mounts. Was this a factory thing or did someone do this on their own. Both cars had engine swaps done, so they weren't the original engines, and the bolts dont all match, some are torx heads some are standard looking bolts.

The car I'm working on has the engine out and the motor mounts are bad, so im gonna change them. A friend of mine thought about just grinding the heads off the bolts to pop open the clam shell, putting in new poly inserts and completely welding the motor mounts back together and on the k-member, so no bolts except whats left of the bolts that where grinded down. Is this a bad idea? would the welds hold up fine for a 383ci with ~400hp & torque?

Just looking for some input on this, or if anyone else has done this.

Re: welded motor mounts

I think it would be safer to grind off the old ones and replace them the right way. Welding will probably melt the poly real fast.

Re: welded motor mounts

they original swapper cheated. He obviously had a hard time replacing the bolts to hold the mounts on and decided to "fudge it" and weld then on. I would recommend grinding the welds off, removing and re-bolting the mounts to the k-member.

Re: welded motor mounts

yeah thats what i figured. i just got done getting the bolts out. 4 of the 6 pulled right out, didnt have any nuts on the other side. and the two that had nuts i was able to get off pretty easily with a universal and extension, and without dropping the a-arm. I'm now in the process of grinding the welds off and i'll be replacing these the right way this time, unlike the previous owner.

the clamshells are all f-ed up now bc of welds and grinding so i'll be buying some new ones at the local store, not sure if i want to go through the trouble of putting poly in them or not. i read the instructions online, drill out rivets and then use a vice to clamp it all together. is that it? anything tricky?

Re: welded motor mounts

It's straight forward. If you can swap an engine, then the poly mounts should be nothin. I think summit has the clam shells with the poly mounts.
