Total Seal Rings?

are they worth the power they claim? i have done a search and seen that they work fine, but do they add the 15-20 hp they claim as well as the 10-12 inches of vacuum? and with this extra vacuum could you use a bigger cam and still use power brakes without a canister thingy?
oh the ones im talking about are the MAXseal gapless, with the gapless top ring and conventional second ring...
thanks

I've used them on 2 rebuilds, they work great but I can't verify their test results...I do know I used the "Quick Seat" powder instead of oil when installing the pistons as per their directions, and have little if any blow-by. I've used the TSS gapless rings as well as the blower set I have in it now.

Re: Total Seal Rings?

I use a Total Seal top rings in my engine. Leakdown remains low.

I wouldn't go by any HP or vacuum claims unless done by an unbiased third party. Each engine is different.

Re: Total Seal Rings?

IVE used them on several engines, as far as IM concerned they are NOT worth the extra cost, they work just fine but IVE seen little or no improvement over standard rings that were installed correctly.
think about it, theres about 2-3 thousands at the most between a piston and a bore once the engines up to operating temp, the ring end gap is about 5-8 thousands at most once the engines up to operating temps, a pistons doing a compression stroke 20-60 times a SECOND when the engines running, how much compression can you loose thru the end gaps of two compression rings with thier gaps spaced on differant sections of the piston anyway.

Re: Total Seal Rings?

I agree with grumpy. I've got a set of total seal's in a rat motor and other than soaking my wallet more we can't see any difference at all. I'd say spend that extra money you save by not buying total seal's and have your block honed with a torque plate to get the bores as round as possible.

Re: Total Seal Rings?

I`ve used them and have them in my current combo, I like the childs and albert Z gaps but Im running the max seal totals right now, leak down is near the same after 2 yes and 150+ runs and thats with 125-150 worth of nitrous on most runs, no blow by or pressure in the crankcase. For a strictly N/A application I`d use them without a thought , for heavy nitrous 250+ it`s just not recomended. I`ll be switching to hell fires this next tear down.
