Have You Ever Been Flashed?

LOL so I thought that would make a funny title for the post.

But now that I have everyones attention what is up with all these people on the road today who instead of using their horn during a traffic violation, feel the need to flash their brights at you? This is EXTREMELY AGGRAVATING.

A quick honk of the horn and I say "Yeah **** you too!". But when someone flashes their brights at me t makes me want to rip them out of the car and superglue their face right in front of a highbeam until their engine runs out of gas and battery goes dead.

So what is up with this trend? Is there a purpose to it or is it just the Mute association of America uniting to fight crime and bad driving habbits?

P.S. - Sorry if I posted in the wrong section I couldn't think of anywhere to put this.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

Well honestly I really only flash my high beams at somebody coming the other way with theirs on, sort of like a "c'mon you ***, turn them off"
but now since I got all new headlights its more along the lines of "Haha, mines brighter than yours, NOW TURN THEM OFF!"

I think you could relate to this too but,
what REALLY REALLY irks me is when I'm doing the speed limit in the morning on the way to pick up the lady and go to school, and every single douche insists on trying to pass me. Once I see them getting off my **** to pick up speed/pass, I downshift into second and start pulling away from them by time they start getting next to me. its just one thing that I cant stand. it happens less and less though, I think they are learning to chill the hell out LOL

I dont think they like that being done to them by a 305 TBI haha

I do agree though that the brights flashing is mostly unneeded

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

Yeah its somewhat the same way here, nobody can make up their mind weather they want to slow down or speed up.

On another note, maybe a moderator might want to give this thread some supervision as I see potential for it to possibly get out of hand...

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

You know I was actually this trend might be intended to blind the offending driver so they will halt in their tracks and avoid the cutoff.

This happened to me leaving from work tonight. My logic is if we are at a 4 way stop and you still haven't budged by the time I come to a complete stop AND give you a 2 second grace period, you weren't in as big a hurry as I was.

And yes I can relate to people being in such a damn hurry and passing around you like your not going fast enough for them. Just a couple mornings ago on the way to work, there is a backroad I always like to take. So the light turns green and I begin making my left turn. After I finish the turn I notice where the one gigantic lane narrows into a single smaller lane, there is a HUGE spill of road salt to the right of the bigger lane section. So I steer towards the left of the lane and creep over it at about 15 MPH not wanting to splatter any road salt up into my frame. Mind you this whole process takes about 4 seconds. Then the douche behind me in his dodge durango decides im not going fast enough for him, blows by me OVER THE FRIGGIN SALT SPILL IM TRYING TO AVOID and cuts me off just before the road turns into a single lane. I was so pissed I ratcheted out of OD and prepared to go down into 2nd, cross the yellow and make an illegal pass around him and then start driving slow as ****. Unfortunately oncoming traffic shut that plan down.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

Just to let the oncoming car know that their brights are still on, or to signal that a cop is hiding behind you (just ahead of them) running radar on the side of the road...That's nothing new.

Those are OLD ways of signaling other drivers, that all the younger generation has stopped doing.

I still do that for both situations & will continue it. I have o problem "brighting" ytheh other guy, who is blinding me with his High Beans.

Oh if someone is coming at me with their high's turned on I WILL flash them back.

I'm referring to this new trend of people using their brights instead of their horn when they feel you cut them off. My reaction is something along the lines of,

"Oh you a real tough guy are you? You know how to use your brake pedal and where your high beam switch is wow your a regular autocross driver. LEARN TO USE THE HORN YOU ****** IDIOT!"

As for alerting other drivers to speed traps, I'm all for this concept. But as you said the younger generation (I'm only 21 BTW) has stopped doing this. So odds are someone will be scratching their head wondering why I flashed them right up until the point when they get pulled over. I also flash my brights to warn oncoming cars of deer when I see one at the side of the road.

Oh...That's just plain stupid.

If a guy cuts someone off, what makes them think the guy is watching for their headlights?

Bigger, louder horns are more effective!

Yeah the times that make you wish your car didn't have mirrors, even without the brights when someone gets right up on your butt and theres a glare coming off all your mirrors right into your eyes. Don't moments like that just make you want to brake check everbody that gets near ya?

Yeah, most people my age have no idea why people flash like that. I've always done it, but my old man taught me that when I younger. Driving well and communicating is a lost art it seems.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

WOW i thought this thread was about photo radar lol

I have had jerks flash their lights at me too, i used to have some bright fog lights wired to a switch so when they flash me i just flicked them on and blinded them.

For the record i am the younger generation and i do flick my lights at people to warn them of cops lol, i also still turn my lights off and on to tell people thanks when they move out of the way so i can pass lol

Flashing your lights on LA's freeways for any reason could get you shot, considering all the nut jobs we got out here.....

I also use my brights as a signal to pass when me and another car are at a stop sign and can't figure out who is gonna go first lol.

I believe that's a European thing, which has somehow found its way into the hemisphere along with all the S-Box platforms upon which the habit originated.

The practice is not as effective with a Firebird, since the "flash" would be more of a "flip" of the headlight doors. Now if we could somehow devise a method of attaching a single-fingered glove to the headlight doors when they pop up...

That was the case when I was living in France--and that was some time ago. Try driving a VW bug on the autobahn and see how many times you get flashed!

OK for the daytime, but at night simply turning the headlights off and back on works a lot better and usually gets you a wave of thanks. At least for me anyways.

In addition to alerting for cops, and oncoming high beams, I will flash highs if there is an oncoming car in my lane. Usually acompanied by a slow down and drift towards the shoulder. Way too many head ons around here in the mountains. No offense meant to any young driver on this thread at all, but there are a ton of dumb kids behind the wheel up here.

I prefer getting flashed VIA brights instead of the horn.

The horn should be reserved for “WATCH OUT - PROBLEM WITH CAR!”

Or to alert bicycles with no mirrors (suicide cycles).

Anyway the only time I get flashed is when I pass cars at a speed they have decided is too fast.

If they would go to driving school to learn how to drive 56 MPH or better, they wouldn’t be passed by everybody and their great grand parents.

I use 5% (95% blocking) tint to cure that problem on the rear window, 15% (85% blocking on the sides).

And when you factor in the NIGHT position of the rear view mirror it ‘turns off’ the brights on the offending vehicle VIA ‘remote control’.

Happy Racing!

If People Drove Any Slower They’d Be Going Backwards

And Probably Using More Lights

Spencer's sells them for something like 15 bucks.

But i'm one of the guys that will blind you with high beams, I don't have a horn (not my fault), and I figure if you cut me off, you must not have seen me. So I'm going to make sure you do. And if you want to pull over and talk about it, I would be happy too. Sorry, I'm a little confontational.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

I just think flashing your lights is a pansy way of getting your point across.

You might as well curse at people in sign language.

I had a small stent as well with an inoperable horn. I simply cursed out the window and shook my fist as the offending driver passed.

I won't even go into the idiot moves people have done to me.

I think the horn thing might be related to people thinking that it will anger people to honk it, even if they've done wrong, so they don't have the raisins to honk it, they just do something that you may or may not notice.

Me? I love my horn. It's the thing I love to upgrade to to some nice air horns.

Nah....Just give them a "brake check".

The extra 2" of cushion suddenly in their pants, is all the reminder they'll need to back off.

Yeah, I just bought myself a Dixie horn, dont have it fully installed though.
would LOVE to hear/see the reactions I get when people try to pass me from now on and cant manage enough speed, they'll back off and ..."insert horn sound effects here"

Thought about a train horn, but the dixie horn was more affordable and has a better "haha" value imo

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

I've thought about putting one of my spare horns INSIDE the car, aimed at the drivers seat...Hooked up to the alarm, of course.

Go ahead....Break in my car & TRY to steal my radio/bypass the ignition/alarm. Hard to concentrate on things with THAT going off in your ears!

That would be funny, especially if you had the type of alarm that locks the doors/keeps windows up and just blare that horn till they go at least half deaf...
teach them a lesson.

back on topic though, I believe it can be universally agreed on that people just suck at driving (from a general stand point)
just have to be careful and watch out for idiots

I light the brake check method as well but I take it a step further. See, the brake lights alert them to your actions. On the highway I just drop it into 3rd gear and sidestep the clutch. They back waayyyyy off after that.

I also like the idea of tailgating lights, though I'm not sure how legal they are. Airhorns would be nice too. One facing back and one facing forwards.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

the tailgating light are not legal, but i think in pa if you have them covered. not sure though. but some how you could have a cutout of the tailgating lights, black them out to make it look official and not like annoying lights. also make sure its not a undercover cop behind ya.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

LOL! I just got flashed again tonight.

I was coming home from work only a few intersections away from the onramp to I-95. The light turns green and I began to pull away. Some idiot in the lane to the right of me (a turn only lane that ends at the light) goes flying around me, cuts me off and gets in front of me in my lane.

I got very livid at this point, and decided to chase after him. So I stomp the gas and am doing about 20 over, come flying up along side of him and cut him to change into the onramp lane and then this little pn scum has the nerve the flash his brights at me. I simply honked the horn and then hopped onto the interstate.

As for the tailgating lights, I was telling Stephen my idea for my taillight modifications. It would be interesting to mod one of the taillights with a dual filament socket for this purpose, unfortunately the game killer here is that the tail lenses are not clear so it wouldn't really be a "hi-beam"...

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

Just put the Reverse lights on a toggle switch, to light them up, independently of the gear selector.

Eh.. not one to bring back threads from the dead, but this isn't too tech and more for the "sweeet" factor in the affect of what you do. The best thing I've seen is a big sticker on the back of a truck that says "Go ()uck Your Self." With an F.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

Tonight after taking a left turn behind a tacoma i passed him, he changed lanes behind me and brighted me for a hundred feet and i thought about this thread . I was going to think of some way to retaliate but the lights weren't reflecting outta my mirror into my eyes so it didnt bother me.

Re: Have You Ever Been Flashed?

people consitintly flash their head lights at me be cause i have hids on my tahoe. it seems to upset older people. normally if they flash me from a distance ill click em off and keep the fogs on till our paths cross. i think at some point every1 has passed a slower car. i try to be decent because id feel like crap if my poor driving caused somebody to lose thier life (even though i go to the street races every week). i got pulled over about a year ago for flashing my lights @ someone to let them know there was a cop ahead. the officer was a d**k and told me that its a criminal act and he could take me to jail.

lastly i get flashed quite often... i go to south beach alot and there are some wild girls out there. when the girls are getting wild in my car and the subject comes about i sit back and encourage it.

Once I see them getting off my **** to pick up speed/pass, I downshift into second and start pulling away from them by time they start getting next to me. its just one thing that I cant stand. it happens less and less though, I think they are learning to chill the hell out LOL
I used to have to pull onto a busy highway with no merge lane on my way to work. People half a mile back seem to get the idea that just because you were going slow when you turned that you're gonna be just as slow when they catch up so they get in the other lane to pass... by the time they reached me I was easily up to highway speed, but they didn't seem to notice and felt like they were obligated to pass or something. I'd keep accelerating and they'd keep up and not notice their speed until about 160km/h. And these weren't jerks or anything... just some weird psychological thing that makes them feel like they HAVE to pass me. Always good for a bit of entertainment on the way to work.
