yes you use a paperclip and cross two terminals over (they are the top two on the right of the plug) and count the flashes of the check engine light,im not to good at describing things so im sure somebody can give u better details on counting the flashes its a little confusing at first

yes you take a paperclip and stick it in certain ports of the scanner plug in. I don't remember what ports anymore, but that's how i did it for my 88.

the 2 ports on the top right side of the ADL connector is what you want to cross.

Re: pull engine codes with out it being scanned?

i have the book, so if you post them i can tell you what it reads.

first code will be
* ** * ** * **
that reads 12. each code repeats three times.
code 12 is the "initialize" code.
after this, just write down everything.
you know its done because it flashes code 12 at the end.

i got the book at napa for not too much money (probably 20 or so) and it tells you how to do everything you need to know about tuning the computers in OBD I cars.
pretty useful info.
its a haynes IIRC
