hey I was just wondering after I do my initial start up/cam break in can I start my motor up and run it repeatedly without actually driving it, or will that hinder my rings ability to seat properly? the reason I ask is that im saving up to have my trans rebuilt, but my motor is ready so I want to do my cam break in, but I wont be able to actually drive it for a while and Im sure after its running Ill be wanting to hear it every 10 minutes

What you need to seat rings is build cilinder pressure, that means WOT pulls from low rpm, high gear to moderate rpm (no need to rev the snot out of it, 3500 will be fine) and do some engine braking (if you have an automatic this obviously won't work like with a manual). Do that a good couple of times and it will be done.

Just running the engine without any load on it will not accomplish this, the walls will glaze up and you will end up with rings that will never seat, a nice oil burner.

This is useful info, I have never gone about seating rings like this, and have had some mild blow-by, the motors did not use oil or smoke out the tailpipe at all, but whenever i pulled a breather I could see trace amounts of smoke, maybe if I do it more like this on my next motor it will cure that problem?
