What is involved with replacing injectors?

What is involved with replacing injectors?
I was thinking of replacing the injectors in my camaro.. Not sure if they were the stock ones that the car came with from the factory but the car has 164k on it and I have symptoms of hard starting and when it does start you get a gas smell which I was told could be a leaking injector(s).. so i was thinking of upgrading them all around with some new ones.. just wondering if this is something a noob could tackle and also what, if any, other items will need to be replaced? are there any gaskets that will need to be replaced?

TPI or TBI fuel injection? If it's TBI, you'll need a rebuild kit as well because there are gaskets that can get screwed up. But since you asked about gaskets I'm going to assume you have TPI. I'm going to guess you should be able to do it without needing any gaskets though. But, I've never worked on TPI before, so I'm not exactly sure. Someone else better answer for that.

Re: What is involved with replacing injectors?
With time and patience anyone with some mechanical skill can do it. However, you will have to take off the entire TPI system. You should go ahead and replace all of the runner/plenum gaskets while you have it apart. I highly recommend Fel-Pro gaskets.
There are 19 bolts in the runners and gaskets you will have to remove. Followed by (4) which hold the fuel rail to the manifold. Make sure you bleed off any residual fuel pressure in the lines. You will also have to remove the fuel feed and return lines and the un-bolt the connection point at the front of the manifold.
There are small clips that hold the injectors into the rail. You simply spin them about 180 degrees and pull the injectors out. Make sure you use all new "gas compatible" o-rings when installing the new injectors injectors.
While you have it all apart, I would also recommend replacing all fuel rail o-rings (about $12) and installing a new fuel pressure regulator diaphragm ($35). This way you have new seals in your upper fuel system and you will not have to take it all apart later on.
I think that about wraps it up. Feel free to PM me if you need more details.

If you haven`t bought injectors yet the ford injectors work just fine and are quite a bit cheaper too.Summit racing carries them. Good Luck.

If it's TPI and the intake manifold has never been removed, you may want to consider pulling it off and replacing the gaskets. It's not that much more work once the fuel injectors are removed.
Mine leaked coolant next to one of the heads, and it leaked oil out along the china wall. I suspect that most of these cars do this eventually.
For TPI, I also recommend replacing the throttle body and runnner/plenum gaskets.
