Battery Keeps Dying

I have an 85 sport coupe with a 305 4bbl under the hood. Been running pretty good up until now. My battery is a bit less then a year old and recently the car gave the dead bettery clicking noise. I knew the alternator was older then dirt and the bearings in it were bad, so I swapped it out. I drove for a bit, and got the clicking again. I rocked the battery around a bit and got it to start. I went home and threw it on the battery charger, and it ran good for a few days. Now I'm back to clicking. The belt on the alt. is fine and adjusted right.

So, I'm thinking dead cell in the battery, or voltage regulator........what do you think? If it's the voltage regulator, where is it on this thing?

Any ideas?

Re: Battery Keeps Dying

well your alternator should only have two wires for the plug in on top. plus a main battery wire on the back. if so the regulator is built in. as for wiggling the battery and it starting i would say you need to check and clean all the connections. turn on the headlights and see if they go out when you try to start it. you know that auto parts will test the battery for you for free.

Re: Battery Keeps Dying

Clean all the cable connections (at the battery, the engine-side ground and down by the starter), recharge and try again. Have the battery tested as well.

If all that checks out, you probably have a slow draw somewhere in the system that's killing it after sitting overnight.

Re: Battery Keeps Dying

after you clean all conections remove the negative battery cable at the battery. put a 12 volt test light between the cable and the battery connection and see if it lights up. if it does you have a power draw. begine by removing fuses and unplugging the alternator.
