Gasket questions
Hi,
this car is giving me a lot of firsts, so i"ll may be asking a few stupid questions.
I'm currently rebuilding the engine after changing the timing chain and sprockets, the waterpump, setting valve lash,...
The installation guide of the new waterpump instructs to coat both sides of the gasket with sealer, but the Haynes manual doesnt. I cleaned all mating surfaces as thoroughly as possible, but will use a sealer anyway.
I have two different RTV's laying around : Loctite 587 and Loctite 5923. Both are blue and suitable up to 500 °F.
Which RTV should I use?
Can I use this RTV also for the threads of the bolts?
Should I use this RTV also on the timing cover gasket?
I bought 1-piece rubber gaskets for the valve covers and the oil pan.
Should I lubricate them with engine oil (like the O-ring on an oil-filter), or also apply RTV to make sure they're tight.
Thanks.

Re: Gasket questions
I'd only use the locktite stuff if you have pitting/uneven surfaces
For 20+ years I've only used a gasket and this stuff
http://www.permatex.com/products/Aut..._Sealant_a.htm
Make sure both surfaces are clean, smooth and dry
A wet finger will find any leftover gasket or crud
And I like these gaskets
http://www.summitracing.com/search/B.../?autoview=sku
But any paper gasket that comes with the pump will do

The Permatex stuff will be easier to deal with if you ever pull it apart again

Re: Gasket questions
Don't use the RTV on the waterpump bolts
Buff the threads and use either anti- or never-sieze
