T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

I need to replace my fuel cap for emissions as the seal is messed up, however, every cap I come across does NOT fit.

My threads have a thinner gap between them and I can't seem to find or cross reference one that will fit. GM P/N 10164142, AC-Delco GT174, CST 6822 all do not fit. Those are the numbers I receive when looking up on parts sites and stores, and they just don't fit.

My gas cap is gray, which shouldn't be relevant, but I'm at a loss at this moment. On the inside of the cap it says M10-2832, which I'm assuming is the thread size as searches for anything like that will not come up with anything.

Anyone have any ideas? Am I able to just pull the seal off of a new cap and put it on the current cap?

M10-2832 is not the thread size, it’s the part number.

There is a used one said to be in very good condition on

ebaY

http://cgi.cafr.ebay.ca/82-92-Firebi...item1c1571f88e

Therefore it is the same type as you have, unless yours was modified for an incorrect neck.

Possibly the tank or neck was replaced before you bot the car.

Examination will tell you if that’s the case.

Happy Racing!

Yeah, I found that too and messaged him about it. He sent me some photos and it looks to be identical.

I'm just curious now; How does no other replacement show up. There's gotta be some sort of dealer or something you can get this cap from.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

I got one from Wal Mart/Autozone/Pep Boys/O'Reillys....Somewhere like that. Been awhile & can't remember exactly, nor do I remember the Part # for it. Just remember it was that yellow card package (i think).

O'Reillys shows (where I think I got mine).....

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Replace just the seal. They come off fairly easy.

I know what you mean. My OE cap fits fine, the locking cap that was put on the car to prevent any more fuel from being stolen doesnt fit well at all. The threads are different, the OE cap has less threads. The number for the cap was the correct one from the books, and its the only one available I found in searching. I cant really help you on finding a cap that will fit, I'm trying to do the same thing myself.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Stant manufactured the stock gas caps... Notice the S logo in the center. Any auto parts store worth a damn should be able to get you one just like the original. If the design has changed, then your best bet is to find a used one. You might want to try the closest gas station, just ask if they found a cap and go through the box from under their counter. If that doesn't turn up a cap that'll fit, hit your local salvage yard and look for another GM car with a cap that will work.

Would replacing the seal on it just work like that?

It's strange because I looked up several applications throughout the entire 82-92 year range, Camaro's, Firebird's, and Firebird Trans Am's. They are all the same part number which contains wider spaces (and fewer) threads. Picked one up from Napa - Won't screw in on mine. Walk over to my brother's 89 IROC, and it screws in just fine.
Even the Stant P/N doesn't fit (NEITHER OF THE 3!), but you're saying from the books that the M10-2832 is the correct P/N. This is really mind blowing. I may as well just pull the seal. Debating buying the one on E-Bay. But the more I look at my cap, it IS original and gray in color , not some aftermarket one and not an aftermarket filler neck.

Oh lord.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Yea, its really strange. There is something fishy with the gas caps on these cars. You may have a different tank than the car originally came with and thats causing it. Mine looks original, but who knows at this point.

I've replaced the seal before, its pretty easy and kept me from failing that test.

Alright, I think I'm going to replace the seal then. That should help. I was trying to do some research into replacing the seal, but nothing came up. I guess they just want you to buy new ones at $7+ each.

The M10 P/N isn't even a valid GM P/N as far as I know. Would you mind telling me where you read that it was the proper part number? I opened up my Service Manual and the only thing I hate is how they don't give you a few pages of part numbers for every little thing.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

I need help!!!! Its just a gas cap, and why is it sooo difficult to get the right one?? ok I had to replace my gas tank with an after market. I believe its a spectra gas tank, what happened to the gas cap when i got it, ???? I don't know, but anyways, i've looked at my filler neck and there is no threads on it, what may be threaded is the inside of the neck but it only has two threads and spread wide open. I think i found one that might fit, but i wanna know if anyone has the same neck filler like mine. How can i attach a picture? soo anyways the one i found is a Stant brand and its Part Number: BK 7031595 at Napa Online. Does anyone have any ideas if this will fit? Mean time i'm going to try to figure how to upload pic.
Thank you

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

The stanr cap doesn't fit at all I have tg e same number cap as you, grey also and also have a new spectra tank. It will go in one thread and start to lock and grabbed the sides and wiggled it popped right off... i think best bet is a used cap. Sucks tho.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Believe ut or not and some might not like it but found tge solution. I used to own a 1994 3000gt vr4 and had a spare gas cap for some reason I stumbled across it today so I fugured id try it. And it fits perfect better then the m10 that came with the car. It sits in lower. Any 3000gt or dodge stealth cap. I can get you the number if needed?

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Hello, I've ended up using the old cap it had before, but i have a number that is suppose to fit, this is the info that was given to me:
Parts master 40817 is what came with my gas tank I believe.Same as the Stant 10819
I haven't looked for it though, so not sure if it fits. Hope this helps.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

Just an update but here in 2019/2020, there is no cap that I've found that will fit an 89 TTA properly (grey cap, same numbers as above). I bought a cap, pulled the seal off of it and installed it on the old cap.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

I bought a supposedly correct gas cap for my car recently. I have to be very careful that it screws on correctly. It does, but sometimes it's not sitting quite right with the threads and you'll get some gas leakage from a full tank messing up your paint. I need to try replacing the seal in the original.

We have been having a cap discussion in this other thread:

If you are having trouble with cap fit, you may have an aftermarket tank. Most of them do require a different cap from the factory cap and several of the part numbers are posted.

Thanks. I'll check that out. My tank is original though. The new AC Delco cap I got does fit, but you have to be very careful putting it on. A couple of weeks ago, I filled the tank, put the cap on (multiple clicks), and I had some gas splash out on the way home.. It was just seated a little off.

Mine is also the original tank from what I understand. The threads between my original cap and the OE replacement Autozone brand were not event close.

Re: T/A GTA Fuel Cap?

A few months ago, I bought a new AC/Delco cap off Amazon that didn't fit well, despite supposedly being the correct fit for an '88 GTA. It resulted in multiple splashes of gasoline on my paint that I had to buff out. I guess it fit, but you have to be really careful putting it on. After the first leak, I was very careful and still didn't get it right.

I bought a new Stant last week, also via Amazon. Fits perfectly.
