Jacking car up cause it to not want to run?

Well today i jacked the rear of my car up so i could change my differential gasket and fluid, after i got the cover done i put the car back on the ground and went to start the car and back it up back into my parking spot and it didnt want to start, it only starts when i put my foot on the gas and keep it on there but as soon as i take my foot off the gas it will idle till it gets below 500 RPMs then die out on me, the car ran fine when i pulled it out of my spot and ran fine when i had the car up on the jackstand, the only reason i ran it on the jackstands is because one of my budds came over who hasnt heard the car run so i started it and let it run for maybe half a minute then shut it off, so would having my car jacked up cause raw gas to get in my engine? i really need help i have an appointment this week to get the cars exhaust put on.

When`s the last time you changed your fuel filter. My car did the same thing turned out to be the fuel filter.

Re: Jacking car up cause it to not want to run?

The angle it was jacked up at could of caused it to pick up some junk off the bottom of the tank. Would be a simple place to start by changing the filter. Alot of times the most simple answer is the right one. Would only cost a few bucks to find out for sure. Would hate if that doesn't do it, but the same thing could have clogged the sock on the bottom of the fuel pump. Changing that would involve the dreaded dropping of the tank to look and see.

Check for a pinched line ,sounds like its not getting enough fuel.Hopefully not the fuel pump.Wondering if by jacking up car caused sediment in tank to plug fuel filter.
You could also check for fuel pressure.

It is possible that your charcoal canister was filled with fuel from sitting at an angle for some time. I know this is dumb since we may at any time park our cars on a hill. There is a vapor/liquid seperator that is supposed to prevent this but being old it may have failed this one time. I would suggest running the engine with a little throttle pressure to keep it going. It should clear out. Otherwise it may be the filter and or the new pump. Hate to say it but more than a few brand new pumps have gone bad for me. Thats why I use Bosch or AC Delco pumps.

funny thing, i let the car run today and it idled out fine, at first it was the same sympotoms. she would die with out my foor on the gas, but as the car ran i was able to take my foot off the gas and it would only die if i put the car in gear or if i turned on my heater, after awhile this all stopped and the car idled just fine like it did a few days ago, anyone know if that plate is replaceable?

Plate? Do you mean the seperator? Its replaceable, its built into the fitting where the vapor line to the canister attaches to the tank. This fitting is inserted into the tank with a grommet as I recall. These parts may be hard to find though since these cars are so old.

Re: Jacking car up cause it to not want to run?

Just another idea to throw you... have you thought about or checked the Idle Air Control Valve. Mine went bad (out of nowhere) after a short drive and caused all sorts of problems that could have easily been mistaken for one of many things (bad gas cap, flooded charcoal canister, bad gas, bad plugs/wires, etc). It would run great if I kept my foot on the gas but would stall at low RPM's. It was intermittent, which caused even more confusion for me. In the end, I took it to the Buick/Pontiac dealer by my house for some diagnostics. I had them replace the IAC valve and I've had no problems since.

I too have had defective brand new pumps off the shelf. I even had an AC Delco pump bad.

I have been in your situation and it just doesn't seem fair sometimes. Good intentions and look what happens. If only you could jack up the FRONT of the car and reverse what happened!!!!!!
Stranger crap has happened............
