Getting a car running again after a few years... My venture...

I figured I'd post some about what I've been doing to get this car running again - I thought it might help someone else in the future.

I got this 1991 Formula back in October and it hasn't run in 3 years. The previous owner explained that the car would run/drive, but under acceleration, the car would stumble and wouldn't go any faster. As a result, he suspected the fuel pump. He cut an access hole, removed the pump only to find the entire pump/sending unit/ and tank FULL of rust. He also suspected (somehow 'diagnosed') that the #8 injector was bad and was shorting the other 7 out.

I verified that the motor turned over freely and ordered some parts. I got a new tank, sending unit, pump, as well as a some fresh plugs.

Since the tank was sooooo bad, I figured it'd probably be a good idea to clear the fuel lines to ensure that there wasn't gunk in there. Since the old sending unit lines were cut, I just disconnected the send/return lines from the fuel rail and then forced some compressed air through - The nasty brown/red old gas emptied from the lines quickly... That was as far as I got today.

As soon as the weather improves, I'll get the tank swapped. After doing some research I think I'll be replacing all of the injectors with new ones before I fire the engine up. After the engine runs a while, I'll swap out the spark plugs and then change oil/fluids. Barring anything unforseen (ie, bad ecm, shot trans), I think it should go pretty smoothly.

Took me a long time, but the car is up and running again. I wound up doing the following:

Installed tank
Installed new fuel pump
Installed new fuel sending unit
Installed new fuel filter
Installed all new o-rings on the entire fuel system
Installed new rear sway bar end links
Installed reman'd Bosch III (22#/hr) injectors with all new upper intake gaskets
Installed new 180* thermostat
Installed new belt
Installed new upper radiator hose
Installed new air filter
Installed new coolant temp sensor
Installed new distributor cap
Install new ignition rotor
Changed rear differential fluid (also added posi lube)

Seems like the engine is actually in pretty good shape. It fires up and runs fine, everytime. I've gotta do some more fine tuning, but all-in-all, for buying a car that didn't run... it could've been worse.
