I've got a 1987 firebird formula with a 5.7L tpi. bought from a local dealer and supposedly has a rebuilt engine and trans with 89,000 miles.

The problem is when i start the car cold, rpms go up to about 1400 as if nothing is wrong then it attempts to drop them and then just die out, all takes about 3 seconds unless i gas it. when i give gas it misfires in what seems to be half the cylinders unless rpms are higher than 2500 then it is smooth.

When it is warmed up all the way it will idle at 500 or 600 rpm but very rough sounding like a stroker, it seems to have less cylinders misfiring but still acceleration is rough and when cruising power seems to be restricted unless i am gunning it.

Spark plugs & wires, ignition coil, and control module have all be replaced. random times it will run perfectly but not very often. I have run some fuel injector cleaner so i don't believe it is the injectors. My father and I think it is a bad electrical connection somewhere since it has worked on occasion but we are not sure.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be other than a bad/loose electrical connection???

 

Also cap and rotor were checked out and seem to be fine. so im stuck what else could it be?

Yes but it was already on and off random times before this started. I'm planning on taking it tomorrow morning to get codes checked.
