is this engine any good?
hi guys im looking for a 350 for my 85 z28 and found one that runs great with these numbers on the block and heads owner says its a 350 with 400 vette heads here are the numbers block#3970010, engine id#k0406cmj any help would be great

There's no such thing as a "400 Vette".
ANY TIME a used-car or used-parts seller utters the "V" word, it's a BIG RED FLAG that he's trying to rip you off. If POs are to be believed, there are by now at least 100 times as many "Vette" everythings running around in the world, as there have ever been Vettes. Like one time, a PO tried to tell me some heads were "out of a Vette"; so we go out in his back yard, and he pulled them "out of a Vette" .... the back seat floorboard. Yeah right. Turns out, they were the usual smogger crap from the 70s; 624 or some such excrement.
010 is probably the single most common 4" block casting there is. So at least, it's not a 305.
Forget the stamping code. If the internals of the engine have been TOUCHED, it doesn't tell you what's inside it now.
Get the head casting #s.
Most likely, they will turn out to be 882, 993, or 624. I wouldn't pay for any of those. I would decline them if offered as a "free" gift. You'd have to pay me to accept them, so that I wouldn't be out whatever their disposal cost turns out to be.
However, if it runs OK and the price is OK for whatever it is, then it might be an OK deal. Instinct tells me though that there's some price jacking going on, with the "Vette" lie now in play, meaning, whatever it's worth, he wants ALOT more than that.

The 010 casting 4 bolt is a tough block, pretty decent nickel content. If you've heard it run, and it's all together, it'd be worth offering him two or three hundred. Just buy it as a complete engine, and reuse the block if you can pick it up cheap enough.
Toss the (most likely) smog heads, toss the internals, and you've got yourself an awesome platform to build on.

are you looking for an engine perhaps for $500 or less that you can just drop in and be done?
Or, are you looking for a fair priced engine because you know in your heart that unless the seller can provide documentation about recent rebuild and parts, that it's simply a junker that needs to be torn down/investigated and done correctly, and you plan on an immediate rebuild?

to get a stock rebuild on an engine you own is anywhere from $1500- to over $2,000, depending on your local economy.
A reman'd long block is about $1500 (plus $300 shipping and core charge), more if it's a roller cam or you can get a goodwrench long block for $2,000 plus shipping.
So, you are floating around a minimum of $2,000 for anything decent not including any induction changes you want/need.
With that said, what do you think $350 will get you? If the engine was worth more than $350 then the seller would be looking for more money.
If you want to drop in an engine and have some level of confidence on the reliability, keep saving your money because you aren't close with $350.
