Supercharged 383 TPI

Supercharged 383 TPI
I found this car on craigslist its a 1991 Z28. The guy told me that it has 50,000 miles and its a 2nd owner car with little rust, it looks really clean and everything, and on top of it its got a 383 TPI with a Pro Charger on it but the down side is, is that the whole thing is stripted out like interior is all out of it, the rear hatch is off of it, the motor is out of it, and some quarter panels are off of the car. The car is mini tubbed to. The guy told me that his son was going to twin turbo the car but doesn't have the time for it anymore. He is asking $4000 but would sell it for $3500. I was thinking that if I bought the car that I would use the motor/tran and supercharger on my 87 IROC that I got with a 305 TPI in it. Let me know if its worth driving 4 hours to get and the price of what he is asking for????
Thanks, mxdirtking

It might be. You never know. Personally, I wouldn't unless I knew exactly the parts I wanted off of it and confirmed it had them before driving out. Even then it's a crap shoot once you actually get there and look at it.
Most times you're better off buying stuff locally. If they know you live 15 minutes away they're less likely to outright lie to you about the condition of things.

Re: Supercharged 383 TPI
The only thing I would be careful of is this type of listing.
EVERYONE on craigslist either has a 355 or a 383.
They know there is no way of knowing this without you pulling the motor apart and if you don't ask for the receipt from the shop that should show at least the block number with work performed, you'd never know and most won't go through this step.
Also with hairdryer superchargers, these bearings don't last forever and aren't easy to change if you've never done them before.
You remove the belt and check for lift and end play, any movement at all will show you the bearings are wearing out.

If its a real 383 and not on its last breathe, to make your own would cost $2K+.
A procharger, again not on its last life is worth $2500+.
Not sure what other parts are in what type of shape.
But you have $4500+ in engine and SC, if in good shape 50 cents on a dollar tops unless he can prove otherwise its less than 10,000 miles or so, but then its only jumps up to 60-65 cents per dollar and thats if your willing. Something moded by some standards are not worth anymore than a used engine etc. So $2250 for motor and SC. Then figure out what you think the rest can be worth to you.
