only way to tell for sure if you have rust in the tank is to LOOK in the tank.

I had the fuel tank out a few weeks ago in my '86 and had no issues with rust. It had very little debri in it, no rust, no rocks, no sediment, pretty clean actually. Except for the sock being a little discolored even that was clean.

Re: rusty fuel tank??? anybody experience??
my car was stored for 4 years (gulf war vet), and then again for 1 year.. ive dropped the tank and saw it when i cahnged the fuel pump, did the old drop-a-chain and shake routine to it to break up the corrosion and tar buildup.. ran ok for a bit but started clogging up my fuel filter every week. the reason im asking is because i wanted to see if anyone else had any mechanical problems to their car and figured out it was the gas tank..

a good pump sock should prevent any rust flakes or debris from being sucked into the filter to begin with.
