Re: Where is the fuel pump relay on a 92 TBI
Hey goalie, The fuel pump relay is on the firewall, driver's side, just above the brake booster. It has a large red wire and a large orange wire to it along with small green and white, black and white, and gray wires. The gray wire is the output power to the pump.
Start your testing by verifying power at the red wire. It should be hot at all times. It comes from the fuel pump/ECM fuse by the battery. Then jump between the red wire and gray wire to see if the pump powers up. Now you know the pump and its wiring is okay and that the fuel pump fuse is good. Then verify ground at the black and white wire. Next, attach the tip of your test light(you can use a test lead or a paper clip) to the green and white wire and turn the key on. The light should light for a second or two with key on. Then crank the engine, the light should light while the engine cranks. If these test all check out, you are good to replace the relay.

Im sorry. I meant to say just to the right of the brake booster, as you look from the front.

Rent a fuel pressure tester from your local auto parts store that will work with tbi. If you have a manual for your car, it will show you how to hook up the tester and guide you through the procedure. Post back with your results

FP is not easy to check on the TBI system. The fuel lines are hard steel. You pretty much need to either need to detach the throttle body to remove the supply line so that you can install an adapter on it. Or you need to detach the bracket that attaches the fuel lines to the upper bell housing bolt at the rear of the motor. However, I totally agree that checking fuel pressure before condemning the fuel pump is absolutely the way to go. The TBI has a pressure regulator spring that tends to crumble, causing a loss of fuel pressure that can make you think the pump is failing. The only way to verify that the pump is bad and that the regulator is okay, once you verify power to the pump, is with a key on pressure test, then an engine cranking pressure test, followed by a dead head pressure test, then a free flow test to verify no obstructions in the system.

The spring is inside the regulator. Once you detach the fuel lines, only three screws attach the injector pod to the throttle body. Once the pod is removed, the regulator is accessed by removing 4 screws on the cover The spring is inside that cover. You can buy a regulator rebuild kit but the spring you have to purchase separately. Before going to the trouble of finding the spring(there are links to it here on TGO), verify that this is your problem.

Yes, please do let us know what the problem and the solution were. This thread will serve as a tech reference for others in the future.
