Do I have to remove the lifters when doing a cam? In my service manual it says they need to be removed but I dont recall ever reading about removing them on this forum.

You not only need to remove em , ya need to throw em away with the old cam , and put 16 nice fresh new ones in after your new cam is in . Then , you must follow the specific break in schedule from the cam manufacturer to the letter .

I promise you , if you put that new cam in with those old lifters , you'll be back here in a month asking "what are all the shiny metal flakes that I keep finding in the oil , and why do my lifters tick like crazy ? "

PS , assembly lube . research it . use it . make that new cam happy .

Re: Valve Lifters

Looks like he has a 90 Camaro which = roller cam IF the motor is original. No need to replace lifters with a roller cam. If for whatever reason it is flat tappet listen to post above.

Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Valve Lifters

Yes you ABSOLUTELY MUST remove them; the cam will not come out otherwise. They will be in the way of all the other cam lobes and the bearing journals. It will not move more than ¼" with the lifters still there.

LOOK AT a cam; not hard to figure this out.
