shut off, wont start back up

Car info: 85 SC w/ built 350 engine and 700r4.

So, driving last night down the highway at about 64 mph the care shut off. the gas pedal went limp and went to the floor. after 30 min. a friend was helping me. I started turning it and he started playing with the throttle bracket (the thing on the side of the carburetor that has the throttle cable connected.) and it started, which is weird cuz i had been working the gas and it wouldnt start. then about 5 miles down the road it cut off again. this time the tach was spazzing out as i pressed the gas then it cut off and the pedal went limp and went to the floor, now I cant get it to start. I know I'm getting air and I'm 99% sure I'm getting fuel. So what might my issue be? no spark somewhere? all my plug wires are connected.

Please help me. Thanks

First of all i shouldn't have to tell you this but you have a problem with your throttle linkage.
Second you need to make sure your getting fuel.
Third (surprisingly) you need to check for spark.

Your issue could be a million things. Hell a barbie doll head could have fallen out of a car in front of you bouncing off the pavement ricochet under the hood and knock a wire loose... Who knows...

Im not trying to be an *** we just need more info to help.

Re: shut off, wont start back up

OK, see if I can clear things up. I attempted to drive it home tonight, it would finally start, but then it would spit from the carb, I think like miniature back fires. And it was smoking real bad but it wasn't oil, I'm wondering if it was an exhaust leak? Couldn't really see/tell. Also I had a vacuum hose running from the pcv valve too idk what that kept blowing off, so I'm sure the vacuum leak isn't helping but idk why it keeps pulling off. The throttle cable/linkage is fine and intact. But the thing just didnt want to stay running, it would spit every few seconds when the I was trying to drive or idle mid to upper range.

Hope this can help, and thanks Brando for chiming in

Re: shut off, wont start back up

OK, o I was looking at it, pulled a couple of spark plugs (cyl. 1 & 2) and they were OK I think that some oil is getting to them. There was some black gunk on the far inside of the thread, closer to the node. Also I noticed that my distribution was loose, as I was able to wiggle it side to side and up and down not a whole lot though, could that have any thing to do with it? I know it ain't good but still.

Given the dist controls the spark , that would be a big problem if it wasn't in the correct location
and it could move around randomly changing the timing as the engine is running.
Most likely would account for the backfire out of the carb if Ign timing was wrong
Need to reset the timing and secure the dist TIGHT before looking for other problems

Re: shut off, wont start back up

OK so just an update, I tightened the distributor down and tried cranking it, and it fired up. So I let it idle for a bit then turned it off and left it, thinking I fixed it. Came back this morning and back to where I was, not firing. Well I took the top off of the distributor to look at the coil, everything looks fine but I don't have a dmm to test the coil with. But my plug wires were all in the wrong place, they were all shifted over one spot to the left, so I corrected that issue, but the top back on, plugged everything back and now it sounds like only one or two cylinders is trying to fire... ideas?
