play allowed on valve stem inside the guides ? 350 L05

Ok, I have removed the heads (casting 193) of my 1992 L05 350ci engine (from a 92 Caprice).

I want to check the play of the valve stems inside the guides.

Has anyone got the values ???

Are they the same if I have steel guides or bronze guides installed ?
(machine shop waiting for the figures ...)

thx !

I got 0.0011" max of lateral movement near the guide but someone tell me this is quite low.

Intake 0.0015" to 0.0016"
Exhaust 0.002" to 0.0025"

I would say you're not getting an accurate measurement if you're getting .0011" max, and this is coming off an engine that has some mileage on it.

.001" intake and .0015" exhaust is a pretty normal target for new.

.002" - .003" is typical for good used. Up to about .005" can be tolerated if you don't mind a slight blue puff now and then.

.0011" is not right; no way you can measure that down to one ten-thousandth of an inch.

.015 is what to aim for.

OK,
so managed to get the values from a service manual (1992)

QUOTE
Stem Clearance

Production
Intake & exhaust 0.027-0.069 mm (0.0011" - 0.0027")

Service
Intake 0.093 mm (0.0037") MAX.
Exhaust 0.119 mm (0.0047") MAX.
UNQUOTE

My car has got 135,000 miles.

The measured values measured are around 0.15 mm (0.0059") MAX of stem clearance as close as possible to the end of the guide (at 0.4/0.05" front the end due to poor access). So real clearance is a bit lower but not that much.

The guy at the shop said the play is not that bad.
But I have a set of new guides and new valves.
Now, price to drill the heads (there are no guides from OEM) and install new guides is killing me (250 EURO per head) but I think I have no choice ...

Re: play allowed on valve stem inside the guides ? 350 L05

When you do new guides you need to redo the seats and valve job because its near impossible to get new guides in that keep valve at the right angle with the current seats. Thats probably where the cost is coming from

I am in this position right now. My play was so bad its amazing i didnt drop a valve probably over .030" haha. Thats what bad rocker geometry will do

Since when? we do it all the time so dont say it cant be done.

To the original poster, On a new typical bronze guide deal we set them at 0.0014 intake and 0.0018" exhaust. Anything above 0.0028-0.003 dosnt pass.
