Couple Q's on motor swap

I know this has been asked a million times but there isn't a sticky! I am swapping the 305 tbi for a 350 carb motor. I know I need a fuel regulator for the carb but is there anything else I need to complete the swap? I think because I am just using a carb I don't have to worry about swapping any ECUs or electrical things..correct?

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

Glad to hear you're doing this too! I did the same thing, you'll need a hei distributor, fuel pressure regulator, some 3/8 rubber fuel line, a tiny(I forget how tiny) hose for the vacuum advance, a carb intake manifold(be sure it has the rear water passages for the 88 and up tbi heads), a carb(duh lol),an npt hose fitting for your brake booster to the manifold, and the intake gaskets and rtv. Don't forget an inline fuel filter as well. Let me know if you got any questions.

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

Thanks for the response! Sounds like everything I thought. So I should be good to go and can remove the ecu and use it as a paperweight? Also the speedometer is powered through a gear in the tail of the 700r4 right?

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

No! Lol you need your computer to run the fuel pump, the speedometer should work fine as Its plugged into the trans. Don't forget that you need the carb bracket to run your trans tv cable.

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

Yup.. actually I might pick up an 85 TA later today thats already carbed. Can I just use the dizzy, intake, and carb off the 305 on the 350 and already have all the parts I need?

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

You can use the dizzy and the carb, but the 85s have the old side bolt heads, you have to make sure it's the same heads, are your heads on the 350 centerbolt like the 305 tbi?

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

If the 350 has centerbolt heads the intake off the older motor won't work

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

Ok good to know. I planned on using an edelbrock performer rpm intake anyway. Will the stock carb on the 85 bolt on to it and be ok for the 350? Do I need to change any jets in the carb for more fuel? I know nothing at all about carbs!

The 350 I am using is a newer center bolt style. I actually bought a 91 s10 with the 350 in it that the previous owner cleaned up and painted. I am planning on using that motor in the Trans am and then putting the 305 in the s10 just for a spare vehicle to sell or just to have around.

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

It should, I'm not sure what the stock carb Cfm is, I put a holley 600 on mines and its plenty. All you should have to adjust on the carb is the air fuel and idle.

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

Cool, thanks for all your help. I will most likely end up rebuilding it so I can learn and have a fresh carb. It probably needs it anyway.

As far as the intake I will be using the one if the pic so its already all set up. Pretty much just swapping what you see there in the TA and taking the 305 out and putting it in the s10. Call me crazy but I would rather have the TA with 48k miles fast and the truck slow. lol

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

I am hoping the TA is still for sale anyway. I have been eyeballing it for a year in a guys driveway down the road from me. Just saw that he posted it on CL yesterday so I am going down there to buy it tonight.

http://westmd.craigslist.org/cto/3682007968.html

I have already seen the car in person and it is super clean.(other than the lack of interior) Only issue with the body is faded paint and some clear coat missing on the roof.

Re: Couple Q's on motor swap

I looked at the pic and can pretty much guarantee that you need to add a one in front of his mileage... Seats don't get tore up that bad from 48k miles, brake pedal pad doesn't get that worn from 48k miles - just make sure you inspect it real close and probably know you're not buying a super low mileage car...

Gonna have to agree there. Wear on the steering wheel as well. No way thats a car with under 50k. May even have to add a 2. Wife put 90k on a car in 4 years and it looked like new still inside.

As well as the other things that have been mentioned you will have no convertor lock-up. You will need to take care of this as you can damage the 3/4 clutches without. Read the the tech article that Mr Kid posted I'm sure everything is in there.
