burning smell

My 89 rs has an unpleasant burning smell. The muffler is bad and needs to be replaced but I don't think that's it. Any suggestions?

Re: burning smell

So:

It smells like (oil, plastic, paper, .... ?)

It's coming from (front, back, underneath, engine, under the dash, ....?)

It happens when (driving for a while, right when you turn the key on, hit bumps, run the AC, ....?)

It's (inside the car, outside the car, left, right, .... ?)

etc. etc. etc.

My car make a funny noise sometimes too. Can you tell me what that is?

Re: burning smell

I sit inside the the car and start it and i smell burning, maybe oil, until i get out and walk away. I don't know a specific area and it always smells. I just had an oil change but it smelled before. And you don't have to be rude about it

Re: burning smell

Check the oil pressure seding unit for aleak.
Check valve covers for leaks.
Check oilpan for leaks.
Look for wires on hot surfaces.
Feel fuse block for hot wires.

sofa is pointing out that any info would be easier to help narrow it down.
Hope this helps & post what you check

Re: burning smell

I don't know if the gauge is just messed up but the oil pressure gauge is always jumping around, whether I have the car in park or I'm taking off from a light.
