Gasoline smell outside of car

I have a 92 RS 305. When I get out of the car I Immediately smell gas outside of the car (the smell comes from the rear end) and its getting stronger. It wasn't always like this it started happening a few months back. And recently my check engine light started coming on (the light turns off once I turn the car off for a couple seconds) and when that happens the car seems to water down a tad bit. It's hardly noticeable but I know it's happening. I don't see any drips on my driveway or wherever I park. Could it be a loose fitting? Could that cause my check engine light to come on due to lack of fuel pressure?

Re: Gasoline smell outside of car

I may need to check that, I just thought these cars did that. I could kill a few small animals while idling

def check it, if those fumes were to ignite, its a fast way to lose a car! when I drive my Camaro for a long distance and open the gas cap after, his hisses loudly (depressurizes) so I know I have no leaks, no smells either....

So is this apart of the recall?

Re: Gasoline smell outside of car

Just a note that the filler neck is not the only source of fuel smell by the fuel tank.

My filler neck is fine, and I get the smell from the mushroom valve underneath the tank. I'm pretty certain it is stuck open. Apparently you can pop them open to clean em out (it's just a spring and plastic). Just another thing to check just in case.

Re: Gasoline smell outside of car

Should I take it to a local mechanic shop to see what's wrong with it or to the dealership since it'll most likely be free?(recall)

Good luck getting recalls done. Since most parts are discontinued they refuse to do recall work

Re: Gasoline smell outside of car

you can try the dealer, if you have a good one, the success rate seems to be about 40% from what I have read....technically its a safety issue and technically they can never expire....but....
