High idle
High idle
A beginner in most of this. I just put new plugs, wires, and distributer cap on this morning. Once I was done I fired it up. Since I got it, it always had a really slow turnover. Still had a slow turnover but when it fired it was idling at around 2300 rpm, it did go down a bit to 2000 but wtf! What did I do wrong? It never idled this high before.

did the distributor move. Sounds like the timing is off. None of those things should have caused your problems otherwise.

Leave the timing alone.
If you didn't move it, it's right where it was before. All you'll accomplish by messing with it is, .... messing it up; and all that will do for you is, create some extra work you don't now have to do, but you'll have to once you find THE REAL PROBLEM and fix it.
Find the vacuum line that you inadvertently bumped and broke or left disconnected.

Sorry I missed that part. I thought it suddenly turned over slow. Your problem sounds like a vacuum leak for sure. I'd still be wondering why it turns over slow but that could be a multitude of things...weak starter, timing, weak battery, poor ground, etc.

I'm looking over the vacuum diagrams in my chilton book now. I will check them in a bit. I unplugged the lines to the air cleaner but I plugged everything back in. I guess I will have to look for the lines I bumped like sofakingdom said.

Check the line ends too. The rubber dry rots after so much time and when you take them off they crack. You might want to take the time to replace all of the lines while your in there, its often worth the lack of head aches later.

I plan on swapping to a 350 before the end of the year. Don't want to dump a whole bunch of money into it right now I'm sure the lines aren't expensive but it was running fine before I put the new plugs, wires and dist. cap on
