basic rebuild or not?

my lg4 spun a rod bearing so I've pulled it out and bought a 350 off craigslist. it was apparently running when pulled a week or two ago for an ls swap, which i believe because i seen the truck it came out of and the new LS in it. its from a 1986 suburban and he says it has around 160k miles on it. there isn't much crud build up in the valve covers and the pan/ oil pump screen/ crankshaft all looked relatively clean and in decent shape. i will post pics asap.

Now im for sure replacing all the gaskets but should i replace rod bearings, piston rings and hone it? or should i just leave it alone or do more? i have a budget of about 400 maybe 500.

Also should i use the stock 882 heads or my old 081 heads? im wanting most hp possible for the least amount of money. im not against running premium gas. this isn't my daily driver and i really only need this engine to last another 20- 30k miles while i save up for an LS swap.

Then this is a no-brainer. Just put it back together with your new gaskets.
Don't take the heads off. Save everything you can for that LS swap starting right now.

The LS swap won't be for another 2-3 years when I graduate collage and start a real job and i need for this car to be at least somewhat reliable because while it's not my daily, my DD has over 210k Miles, so when stuff breaks on that I need to be able to drive this car while I fix it. And I'd like to get the most hp as possible to have at least a little fun in the mean time.

Re: basic rebuild or not?

160k miles is nothing to be concerned about if the motor was reasonably taken care of. And if it wasn't, then your budget of 400-500 is sadly gonna come up short.
But.....you can ignore any answer to your question that you choose

Re: basic rebuild or not?

Button the thing back up and drop it in and drive it for another 100K+ miles. With only 160K on the clock there is no need to waste money or time on bearings, rings, etc.

We have one of those same engine's in our suburban, all stock 290K miles on it and still going strong.
