Why Did GM Do That?

I'm researching the parts necessary to replace the 30 year old factory thick rubber fuel lines on my fuel injected Bird. I've found the line from the sending unit to the fuel filter, but it is all hard line, no rubber at all. This seems like the better idea from the start, why did GM use that rubber to hard line instead of this new style?

You should have rubber lines that connect the lines from the sending unit in the fuel tank to the hard lines that go to the fuel filter.

The rubber lines are for vibration and flex, so they don't crack.
