Air pump noise

Installed a new air pump and check valves on my `85 IROC 5.0L TPI. Pump seems too noisy. I've attached a short vid. Any ideas as to why? Also having issues with the aluminum case oxidizing, as well as other new aluminum parts such as alternator, master cylinder and throttle body. Any suggestions on solving that issue?

Thanks, guys!

Happy new year to all!

Re: Air pump noise

Low airflow and high moisture levels underhood.
if this is in a garage, you need a dehumidifier and a fan

Re: Air pump noise

On my 89 LB9 IROC a few years ago, I replaced the original air pump. with a reman air pump. The reman pump also sounds noisier than I recall them sounding, back in the 1970- 1990.s .

Re: Air pump noise

That does seem excessively noisy. If the interior of the pump housing is corroded like the exterior, that might explain it. I can't imagine salt air blowing 10 miles inland, but if it is, the chlorides are going to continue to have their way with bare metals - Even stainless;

Re: Air pump noise

Thanks, guys!

TTOP350. It's in the carport of the home we recently bought. Hope to enclose it. We do live in the PNW so humidity is a given. Will try a fan underhood to create some airflow.

Eightyninef. Certainly tempted. Do you know if that will cause the ECM to throw codes?

Mikeceli. Yeah, the original pump was quiet.

Vader. Sadly, this isn't a new developement. The pump was just as noisy when I first installed it so the issue can't be internal corrosion. I guess it could be an internal defect.

Tailpipe emissions do seem rich. Possibly due to a defective smog pump?

Re: Air pump noise

If you remove the discharge line from the pump does it still make that noise? A pump running dead-headed against a closed valve or plugged line can make similar noise. Failed air injection check valves can either block the discharge of the air pump or allow exhaust back into the pump, causing corrosion.

I doubt that the air injection pump is causing a rich mixture aroma in the exhaust. Unless there has been some hackery going on in the air injection system, that really can't happen since the injected air is supposed to go to divert mode as soon as the system achieves closed loop. If that isn't happening,and/or the oxygen sensor is getting extra air, all bets are off. It also may have nothing to do with the A.I.R. system whatsoever, and is merely coincidental.

Re: Air pump noise

Thanks, Vader. I'll try removing the discharge line and see what happens. I'll also test the check valves to be sure they're flowing properly in only one direction. I suppose I could've gotten a defective one. All I know for sure is the noise drives me crazy! I want to get this resolved along with a few other things before I put her up for sale in the Spring/Summer.
