Engine noise! smog/air pump?
when the rpm's goes up, or when i drive i get a cranking noise from the engine. when it idles at 5 rpm at a stop or light it goes away. i was told it's from the smog/ air pump. and that camaro's are common for this. What do you have?

Remove the serpentine belt temporarily and see if the noise goes away.
While the belt is off, spin the air pump by hand and see if its making noise. I just had to replace mine due to a noise, turned out to be a failed bearing. It cost me $100 for a new rebuilt one from the auto parts store. It sucks, but its required by law to be there.

Re: Engine noise! smog/air pump?
when i had my air pump off my car i ended up turning it by hand and it made that squeekying noise. so i thought i needed a new one. after i got the new one, i noticed it had a sticker on it that said "it is normal for this pump to make noise if turned by hand". and sure enough it did, made the exact same noise as my old pump. so i went ahead and used my old one and returned the new one. pump doesn't make noise while the car is running. aparently the pump is supposed to make noise if ran under a certain rpm 500? or so. just something to think about.

Re: Engine noise! smog/air pump?
Thanks! The noise comes from the front passenger side of engine bay. it has an air suction noise and a tick sound. when i rev up the engine it increases in sound. is this still the same problem?

could be, like kevin suggested, remove the serpentine belt and run the engine to see if it still makes the noise, don't run it for over 30 seconds though, water pump not running = bad.

Go ahead and check all of your pulleys. Sometimes it can sound like it is coming from one area when it is actually coming from another. Specifically check the water pump, alternator, and tensioner pulley. My bet is on the alternator.

Yep mine does the same, although just tonight my air pump locked up on me. Ugh the smell of burning/melting belt, sound of squealing, and smoke coming up from under my hood scared the hell out of me lol.
