Beat by a Turbo Neon. He was Fast !!

Comming back from Nanuette, NY Sunday on the GSP a 96-99 Neon flys by me and my friend in his 01 Saleen Cobra. Yes a Saleen Cobra. They made 6 that year it came from the factory with the Saleen Body kit. Well we each had a twin in our cars, they are hot. I look at my friend and he tells me to go get him. Me getting my 86 back I was like sure. After he had to be going about 105 I was starting to catch up around the turns. He had to see me in his mirror catching up and guns it again and took off like a bike. I kind of did one of these So we hit the toll booth I follow him in and he waits for me. there is a one lane exit at the booth. I see his boost, air-fuel, NOS gauge, and a couple of others, at least 7 all together. He hits it and I hit it in first he was a auto i got a T-5. I am pulling up his *** right now and had to shift into second. Go to power shift into second and forget my shifter has problems going into second and miss the gear. So I lost fair and square on my own mistake. I cought up to him and he said he was running a t77 turbo with a 150 shot of NOS jsut incase. The car looked bone stock except for the gauges. no loud annoying fart pipe either. Maybe I should get one of those and do what he did. That was my second loss since last thursday. the first was to my friends 01 cobra, we went from 85 to about 115 like we are supras with big turbos. I got beat by 1 1/2 cars. To the track next wednesday to see what this baby runs. witha stock exhaust and manifolds.hoping for mid 13's the 01 cobra is running 13.3 both of us are t-5's

Turbo Neons can be pretty ****ing fast. My freind...well not really my freind anymore...but anyways his car is running mid 12's at the moment. w/o nos or anything like that. See theres a difference between a rice boy and a import tuner (yes I know Neon is domestic but you get what I'm trying to say)

Rice boy - someone who does appearence mods thinking it will make him fast or handle extremly well

Import tuner - A built import/import like car that is fast or handles extremely well

That's ironic, I made a post about your wing on the TECH board. Might want to check it out. Not to rag on you, I just didn't think that your wing really helps you drifting, but I am far from an expert.

Also, that Neon would have to be a turbo, cause my GF had an '02 Neon as a rental car for a day. That thing was HORRIBLY slow.

Or maybe it could be like you coming into any time I reply and raggin on me. So um, why stoop to my level? I'm not calling his car gay. I thought the whole point of him putting the wing on was for handling, and it appears that it doesn't help handling at all. Just tryin to figure out the use of those wings. I'm not tryin to bash on his car. If you check my TECH board post I never put his car down, I was asking a ligitimate question, so why don't you back off some. K.

Hey this post was about me loosing to a Neon and not a damn thing was said about that besides Revlimit's coments about them being fast. Personally I like his wing on his car. And once he fixes his ront air dam it will look so much better. People always hatin on other people's styles. I think I am going to to put a club sticker on my car that says sponcered by highspeedimports.com Just Cause now. Get the C5R wing and put that on my 86. If I had the money I would put some Spreewells on there the rims that spin all the time but don't want to spend 10K just for rims. I am going to spend Close to 20 K for the EVO II kit with the Lambo doors. Everyone is intitled to their own style. We don't make fun of Mak for takinga reflection picture of his car with his shirt off do we, of CrazyHawaiian for going through tire after tire because of drifting. Damn or even me for that fact taht this is my 3 trans mount I need to get from racing and Power Shifting into 2nd and 3rd. Or for me going crazy with my paint scheems, $hit man I had a pink car for my first car. It was a camaro but it was pink. And now my 86 with the chrome illusion fading into my Red paint. We can pick on each others style for hours and hours. But it all comes down to this. INDIVIDUALS. I don't think someone else can take a picture of their car with their shirt off, or graft a air damn from an Accord(hope i'm right about that) onto their front or a big wing on the back, Drifting is a sport that has a lot of money to buy tires. $hit give me some and stop drifting I could say but we like what we like. And we all have a common bond America car F-Bodies, if they don't bring them back I could at least tell my kids and grand kids I had some pretty bad *** cars when I was younger. and they all looked different. Opinions, People, A$$HOLES, and CARS are differnet so deal with it.

Had to vent to much naggin and hating on people style going on latley. Off to the Import shop to get some new RED INTERIOR LIGHTS AFTER WORK!

Maybe we need a poll to decide this thing about "the wing". Do Camaros with big aftermarket wings look cool or do they look rice? Just kid.

That's fine, I wasn't raggin on him cause I thought he liked it. Obvisouly he likes it, but I thought he said the main reason for putting it on was for functionality. Sorry I didn't realize he did it for looks.

I personally like the Aluminum Racing Spoiler...... what makes it "Import" anyways????????? It's UNIVERSAL. And FUNCTIONAL. My friend drives a 02' Camaro SS with one on there....... its not as high as REVLIMITS...... but only by a few inches. They help.... trust me. The downforce created by those things when your pulling a quarter is amazing...... you can almost feel your tires gripping the ground... I'm telling you... its amazing. Hell.... I almost put one on my car.... but I decided I'd rather keep it as factory looking as possible. But don't trash on people because of an idea..... you never know....... that wing could be what your missing... =)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Oh and by the way..... your Iroc-Z looks like crap...... whats the function in having black outs, anyways? BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION........... So don't feel bad." =) Fun! See what I mean? =)

The BS flying through this thread is outstanding. Those aluminum wings are by no means functional unless your on the autobahn doing insane speeds. theres no way it's remotely functional in the quartermile. " I feel my tires gripping better" yeah, right! the amount of airflow that is needed to make one of these wings functional is not attainable by a thirdgen unless heavily modded.
Revlimit likes his spoiler bottom line. stop ragging him about it. But by no means RevLimit will that wing help you in laterall drifting at all. Sorry.

That is considering your idea of whats functional is merely your opinion. I have seen them.... i've driven with them. They work. Regardless of what you think..... I've been there 1st hand.

Yeah, ok , the wing just creates so much downforce at launch that you can just feel those tires gripping better

put a sack of potatoes in the back and tell me how different it is. the only difference your feeling is extra weight in the rear

I wasn't talking about his thirdgen now was I? And your wrong about the whole wing in perspective..... its functional when racing.... it doesn't do crap for normal driving or stoplight racing.... I'm talking about highly modified cars drag racing. I never said it helped HIS car. Regardless of what you THINK is true.... it helped my friends SS. I'm not talking about REVLIMIT's car at all. It may not be functional for HIS car.... but in some.... it does help.

So is this SS a highly modified car. Cause the only good it would do would be to keep the rear steady near the top end of the 1/4 doing like 110+ mph.

Yes, the SS is highly modified.

All I am saying is..... I drove his car before the wing and after the wing...... and I could tell a difference. And it wasn't just rear-end weight.

Reeeeeeal quick question....why would you need a wing like that on a '02 SS camaro anyways? The downforce it created would only lower trap speeds...and any downforce it created on the rear would be totally....unnecessary....unless of course you happen to run with the big dogs...that is, you called Kenny Berstein and John Force pit-buddies or something....Truth be told, unless your making 1000+ horsies, you really don't need all that much of a wing, maybe a little decklid spoiler, for stability on the big end of the track....If you guys want to handle well at high speeds, I suggest you start taking a look closer to those "gripping tires", take a good look at your suspension...that's where most of your bite comes in....off the line, in a 150 mile an hour curve. I'd also like to state that I'm not trying to bash anyone either, just thought I'd clear up a misconception that a huge wing will make an "actual" (not saying you won't 'feel' more stable) difference. Most of us don't push our car's that close to the limit to need any kind of huge aerodynamic help, and no, drifting isn't putting your car on the ragged edge, it's intentionally going straight off it. As such, wouldn't a big wing hinder the whole drifting idea?

Exactly,

and back to the SS, I wouldn't drive that car with that wing. The wing may help at the end of the 1/4, but traction isn't an issue then, only on take off, so basically it's only creating drag.

a T77 AND a 150 shot! holy ****!!!!

i'm curious to see what times that thing pulls..i'm sure he's had that motor out and done MAJOR MAJOR rebuilding...unless he wants to join the DOTC Crew

and BTW that wing DOES NOTHING at the track, well maybe at the end but who cares, doesn't help launching, no way, no how...

I can't explain the whole thing..... and neither can you guys. All i know is..... his times have gotten better ever since he added the wing... regardless of what you guys say. Whether he just became a better driver from boost of confidence or something from having the wing or what.....I dunno...(?)... but it helped his times in the quarter.... that's all I'm going to say about it. Maybe when your picturing this SS..... you're seeing the wing on REVLIMITS car. Its not as big as his. I said Aluminum Racing Spoiler..... I'm not talking about THAT Aluminum Racing spoiler.... my friends isn't as wide and its shorter by about i'd say 8 or so inches. (Maybe a "few inches" in my previous post wasn't the best choice of words). And you have to keep in mind...... my friends SS is highly modified.... this isn't a regular "Hey look.... my car says SS.... so that must mean I'm faster than you!" type car.
Laws of Physics is all it is....... you guys can think what you believe..... I'm not saying your wrong or anything like that.... I'm not going to say anything bad about you..... but all I know is..... it worked for his particular car..... I don't know how EXACTLY or anything...... but it helped his car..... regardless of what you guys think happened.... Nuff said.....so you can go ahead and talk your physics all you want.... or "common-sense" as the jackasses who think they know it all put it.

I wonder if puttin " NOS" sticker on my windshield will make my car stable at the end of the quarter! j/k Ok I'll stop being a smart **** . The thing is if that wing makes the owner happy fine that's his car (no problem there) but if he or someone else makes a statement about a wing improving any kind of performance Please expect that the thirdgen members here will ask what proof there is backing up that kind of statement.

His SS usually runs mid to high 10's - low 11's. Before getting his wing... he was running mid to high 11's usually. His wing isn't like the one on REVLIMIT's though.... its different...... it's not THAT big. REVLIMIT's wing looks a lot different from his. My friends is more compact than that... its not really all that big. But it did help. I'm talking about aluminum racing spoilers.... not THAT Aluminum racing spoiler...... I doubt the wing on REVLIMIT's does anything more than drag is car..... but.... he likes the look, so more power to him.

no offense man but NO WAY IN HELL a "wing" is going to possibly shave off a full second, either you're lying out your *** or you're SEVERELY misinformed...you said after wing mid-high 10's-low 11's, kinda bit gap there...before wing mid-high 11's...sorry no wing is going to shave a second off....

WOW I should get one of those wings

I mean it got his friends car from the 11.5-11.9(mid to high 11's)down to the 10.5-11.3 range(mid to high 10's to low 11's).I mean mine runs 11.7's and it will take about another 150-180hp to do what his wing did

Back to the original topic, you gotta watch for those imports(and aparently 3rd and 4th geans)that don't have all the stupid stickers/wings/body kits cause the plain ones are usually just plain fast

My friends is more compact than that... its not really all that big. But it did help. I'm talking about aluminum racing spoilers.... not THAT Aluminum racing spoiler...... Hey guys, maybe I should sell my supercharger and get into the real mods, like wings! Afterall, If I can get a full second off my 1/4 with a $200 chunk of aluminum, why spend $3500 on something that just blows air???

Anybody see this month's hot-rod? There's a 10 second formula in that issue. He doesn't even have the STOCK spoiler. He seems to get through the 1/4 just fine, so I doubt that anybody's aluminum wonder-structure is doing a damned thing. Even if your car was a little squirrely at the traps because of the bias ply slicks, I really doubt that the downforce from that spoiler is going to offset the slower times due to the amount of drag it creates.

I had a run in with a HIGHLY modified turbo neon on a highway last December. Very fast car, although, I was coming through his trunk and had to lay on my brakes to stop from driving through this guy, but still. He gave a good run but was still in the minors, lol. There are quite a few neons out there that can lay waste to a lot of cars out there. Be careful

Now, on to the wings: Anyone who thinks that a wing, nothing else, can take a mid 11s car into the mid 10s is an idiot!!! Plain and simple. Stock lip on a camaro is perfect and is much more functional than a bolt on tower.

I don't keep up with his time slips and stuff..... I was only guessing at the times from what i've seen... honestly... it did him more good than bad. So you guys can crack jokes with each other like you are right now all you want..... bashing people about their cars and ideas and accomplishments for that matter.... all I have to say is.... keep on bashing and stuff until you get your *** smoked by somebody who knows more than you... (if thats possible )... but then again... you guys know everything....

dude, you would've done better to keep quiet and let this die. you are not going to shut people up who are bashing you by giving them more information and ammunition to bash you with.

it's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it.

btw, where can i get three of those wings? i want to invert one and put it under the nose, one for the roof and one for the back... that'll get me into the 12s...

That reminds me, about a year or so back there was a turbo neon featured in HRM that was running really low times, I want to say like mid 10's or 11's. So those neons have alot of potential if you know how to tune em
