Traction almost costed me some humiliation

I am driving around in the GTA and its about 46 degrees out, and my friend in an 01' Explorer Sport gets about 2 cars behind me in the next lane and floors it, so when he is at my door I floor it....I caught up to him and stayed neck and neck then let off....so he got in front...well we got to my friends house and he was saying how he beat me and all this other stuff....so I said come on lets go again from a stop, and he was like well ok...so we lined up on a two way street, two lanes, no one around and we decide to go on a 3 count...well I counted and on 3 he floored it and didn't do a thing but hook, and i stayed there burning tire all of 1st and when I hit 2nd I still spun!, so at about 2400 RPM I started to gain on him and mind you the whole time I was spinning tire I was on his rear quarter panel.....and I was just about to start passing him as if he was standing still and got up to his door and here comes a car pulling out of the street so I let off!!! DAMN IT!!! He told me to go again so we did and the same result except no car coming in my lane so I ended up beating him pretty good, that little Explorer has some ballz...anyone know what they run in the1/4? ......AARON

Car: 1986 IROC-Z
Engine: 355 ci TPI, 10:1 cr, Isky cam, ported heads, dual exhaust
Transmission: 700R4, ratchetting shifter, 3.23 rear
You know what helps for me? I still spin, but can lessen it a lot (not to mention saving the 700R4 a little) if I just feather the gas on the launch to get moving, usually just tracking the other vehicle. And then, MASH it. You'll still spin, but you'll spin a lot less because you're already moving and you'll find that your launch ends up being a lot quicker.

You know, kind of like what the race cars do at the dragstrip. Sometimes they utilize electronics that allow them to get off the line, ease off the throttle, and then haul *** a split second later. They do that to control their ET. I do that to control my wheelspin a little.

You have to leave the line feathering or else youll lose alot of races. You might be close the 1st 100feet ot so, but at least you wont lose..

Hey man, good win against the explorer. It is good to keep your friends in line, otherwise you will never hear the end of it. I use that method of feathering the gas too from a stop. It is for another reason though. If I floor it in my car from a stop, it is excrutiatingly slow because my gears, cam, and stall don't match. It is actually faster at 1/2 throttle because at WOT there is just too much gas at too low of an rpm. So I wait until 3000 rpms comes up and then I slam the pedal down. I keep the shifter in 1st so it doesnt shift into second at all. I wouldn't want to lose that steep 1st gear ratio, especially with my low rear gear. I wish I could spin my tires the way those 350s do. I can't wait for the new gears and TC this winter.

ya i rember the good 'Ol LG4 heh, but ya the new 355 i have just spins the tires off the line so ill have to try feathering it, i dont have too much power, 213, hp and 307tq at the rear wheels, but i still just light them up. so next time im going against a car ill try feathering it.
