88 crapmaro vs. '03(?) GT

I had the classic showdown. Camaro vs. Mustang.

I was desperatly looking for a gas station as my car was damn near out of gas when a stock trim GT rolls up at the light. From the sound of the engine and the fact that it sounded like he stalled the TC prior to launch, Im guessing it was a full stock trim car with an auto. I wasn't going to race him since I was on flat empty but two seconds after he took off, I decided to go for broke and dumped the clutch and went. Easily reeled him in in first and second, but in third, it was really struggling to get by him. Leveled off and just barely started creeping by after his car shifted. I had about a car length by 75-80 where I let off. What did these run stock in the 1/4? Mid 14's @ 98 MPH or so?

Definatly confirms that my engine doesnt have any top end. Its all torque from 1600-2500 RPM and thats it. Luckily, though, I anticipated this and oversized the hell out of everything. Nearly zero pressure loss through the intake and have a full 3" exhaust. The rest of the specs are 204/214 .420/.442 cam, vortec heads, TKO, 9-bolt with 2.77's. Thinking its time to stab a cam in and replace the 2.77's. Cam swap will be gravy, shouldnt even have to bother tuning. The gears are a different matter with these rears.

They run low 14s stock. They can run 13.8-13.9 with a cool night, 5spd, and good driver but most stock auto GTs run 14.0-14.4.I would run a 3.23-3.73 with that 5spd. 2.77 gears is a major highway gear. I don't know what type of TBI fuel injection you are running but something in the 210-215 dur would help alot with power.Going from a 2.77-3.42 will more than likely make the car faster then a mild cam swap.Definitly do the gears!!!!

Also just wondering, you say you have full 3in exhaust? Do you have headers with it or just catback? I have seen that same cam with the vortec heads, 600 holley and full exhaust with headers run right about 300hp in a third gen car back in the late 90s.

You read my mind Getting gears and a new carrier is going to be tricky, unless I get another rear. Doesnt seem like there are many parts available anymore for the 9-bolts. The TBI system itself is actually a one-off system that I developed. Its based off of the operation of a carburetor. Similar to tune and behaves the same way, just much more complicated

Its got headers and a full exhaust. It does have a cat, though, so I have to run a bit rich to prevent melting it down and I have a habit of lugging the motor at times, so I reduced the timing somewhat in the lower areas to prevent detonation. Id imagine that skims some power off the top.

I assume your block is not a roller-block but it could be.I would think something with a 112 lobe seperation in a hyd. roller cam like the zz4 or GM845 would make a noticable difference and work well with your TBI.208-215 dru. with a good bit of lift like the zz4 or 845 and you should jump on power in the mid-range and top-end and probalby lose very little down low if any.It does not have to be a cam like that but a 112 lobe seperation I think will work good with the TBI and comp makes some good cams for FI as well.I bet even the zz4 cam with only 4deg more duration on the intake then the cam you have now would make a huge difference.
zz4-208 221 dur 474 510 lift Hyd.roller cam
GM 845- 214 224 dur. 488 509 lift Hyd. roller cam (It is a crane cam built for GM)Crane HR-276 it what cranes version is called and I know alot of guys think it is to mild but I have seen alot of Impala ss cars that run this cam and make great low end and they gain 10-15hp more up top then a zz4cam.Great cam for a daily driven fuel injected 350.Just depends on what you want.

The reason you run out on the topend is the cam. That thing is TINY!

LOL, it is a one-off system designed by you, but there are 3 examples up and running.

The ZZ4 cam is hard to beat for being able to pick them up cheap and actually make some HP with them.

My Vortecs went with my engineer buddy this evening.

When I get them back they will be

CNC ported
Hand blending
He said they run right at 260 cfm on the intake and 230 cfm on the exhaust @ .500" lift on the flowbench with a 4.00" bore restricter @ 28 in/h20 pressure drop after porting.
Cut them for the ZZ4 cams lift
Deck them
Back cut the valves
3 angle valve job

$350 is all I am going to have in them.

I had the Crane HR-276 in my 312. In the 305 it would pull to 6,500 rpm easily. My brother has the same cam in his Tahoe's 350.

Damn, with the ZZ4 cam, those should be a potent setup with those flow numbers.

The TKO 500's have a fairly deep first and second gear. Im sort of leaning toward an XE256 with a 112 LSA. This car is junk, and I dont feel like dumping lots of money into it. I figure a cam kit and springs should be able to give good mid range torque and performance with the stock heads.

Its still a definate improvement over how it used to run with the stock TBI system. Last time I raced, I lost to an old, rusty CRX with the 85 HP motor. Its amazing what a good tune can do.
----------
I was thinking of a new rear as well, but even with the 2.77's I still spin the hell out of first, even from a roll. When I raced that guy, I had to slowly roll into the gas so it would hook up and not light up. Ill have to see how it works with the new cam and take it from there.
