RS vs. Pantera?

Ok guys, hear me out before you call it a BS story. I was coming onto rt195 from rt95 heading east when I see a bright red "thing" as I entered, it was going around 60mph. I caught up to it to find out what the hell it was. from far away I could tell it was a rear wheel drive car that resembled a ferrari or something. I see some script writing on the driver side of the bumper, but couldn't make it out. On the right side in script it said Pantera. I have seen a couple of them at shows to remember that they look pretty hardcore under the trunk/hood. I got beside the 50 some year old guy smoking a cigar and he nodded at me. We both took off, or at least I floored it, but his car drown out my exhaust, so I had to look at the tach, I was doing 5 grand! I stayed next to him until about 90mph, when I inched ahead(literally, I was only creeping). He hung around, but let off before my speed governor kicked in (thank *** , that would have been embarrasing). Anyway, who makes the Pantera, I always thought they had some affiliation with ford? I don't think this guy was just amusing me, I know a street race whan I see one.

The pantera was a joint effort by DeTomasso and Ford, similar in setup to the Cobra (the REAL Cobra--AC and Ford). As far as I know, DeTomasso made the body and interior stuff, maybe even the suspension. Ford supplied the engines: 351W (may have been others, but I don't think so).

Anyway, I know this much because my dad loves those things and a guy he works with actually has one. He bought it new in the seventies and has had it ever since. He keeps it absolutely beautiful--he has demonstrated that you can put on a white glove, feel all around in the engine compartment, and the glove comes out white. He has both the original 351W and a built 460. He swaps them in and out. For a while, he had it running on nitromethane. Get this--from the time that his son learned to drive until he went off to college, this guy had pantera partially disassembled and with no engine in it! It's his pride and joy. Anyway, just thought I'd let you know my experience with Panteras.

BTW, the car is bright yellow with black "PANTERA" writing.

They sure are really sweet looking cars, I'll give them that. What exactly were they designed for, like, GP, or dragracing? They look like a hard animal to work on, I think the closest I'll get is having a big Cowboys From Hell PanterA band sticker in the window! Thanks alot for telling me about them, it's been bugging me since it happened. later- Randy

My neighbor used to have one, and sold it to buy a boat . I was younger when he still had it so I'm not sure exactly how fast it was, but I can just say it was fast. I love the way those things sound! That is probably the one car that is powered by ford that I would drive.

The following information was taken directly from PanterClub.com:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
The Pantera is DeTomaso’s most significant production car to date</font>
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">In describing the Pantera’s career, especially from a U.S. perspective, it is easiest to view it in three separate stages: the Ford importation era (1971 - 1974), the post-Ford era (1975-1990) and the final iteration (1991-1994), as these last Panteras were substantially different than all prior machines</font>
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">In the late 1960s, Ford was in need of a high performance GT to combat the likes of Ferrari and Corvette</font>
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Secondly, it to be built around Ford’s then-new 5.7 liter (351 cu. in.) "Cleveland" V-8. This engine featured deep-breathing heads patterned after the very successful Boss 302 design, 4-barrel carburetion and 4-bolt main bearing caps. The new V-8 was mated to a ZF fully synchronized 5-speed transaxle with limited slip, and rated at 310 horsepower (SAE Gross, 1971 trim).</font>
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Ford supplied the engines: 351W (may have been others, but I don't think so).</font>
Most that you'll see at shows or on the streets are Cleaveland powered. I know some of the post-74 model Pantera's were equipped with Windsors, but were any of the '71 - '74 models?

Those are pretty cool engines. Not real common, but it was built to be "the ultimate small block" as far as design, and they did pretty good. Too bad there aren't more around they have a ton of potential.

How about these: SHELBY COBRA SHELBY GT500

Hey it looks like all the fords I like are actually Shelby's. I don't really even consider them to be fords. I should look into the whole Shebly and ford thing. I don't when when he split from ford and founded Shelby American. I can't imagine that he could have had his company at the same time he worked for ford--I doubt ford would let him have a contract that allowed that, as there might have been a little conflict of interest.

Nic and HrdRockA4305, you are right--it is the 351C, not the windsor, that was in the pantera.

'70 was the last year of the Shelby Mustang, but they were really just carry-overs from the '69 model year as Shelby and Ford had already stopped working together. Shelby was never too happy with Ford after the '65 run of the GT350 because thereafter Ford started to add comfort items, which the 65 model didn't have and Shelby viewed his GT350's as racecars above anything else. The Shelby Mustangs are true Fords through and through, but the Cobra's aren't. They're just a huge AC/Ford/Shelby conglamoration.

Another interesting car from the '60s that both Ford and Shelby took part in was the Sunbeam Tiger. It's another British sportscar mixed with a Ford engine, that Shelby was able to talk Ford and Sunbeam into participating in. They're commonly referred to as the "poor man's cobra" these days.

Man, you really do your homework! Time for me to brag a little about my affiliation with ford- my best friend and his family own and established Perogie Enterprises. From what he tells me, everyone knows of them. Thanks for all the info, I now consider myself well informed about the Pantera. Later- Randy
