Never seems to end

Well we got my PSI problem narrowed down to the Fuel pump. Its changed and back into the car now.

I got a new imco muffler to be put on because I blew the guts out of my Dynomax turbo.

When we had the gas tank down we found that my I-pipe had a huge *** hole blown out of it right at tyhe top of the bend were it goes over the axil, so we ordered in a new 3" I-pipe. Should be in tomorow.

When we got it running with the new pump, it was hesitating and burping abit with quick rev's. With a closer inpection we can hear a rattling under the passside valve cover. We think I might have a broken spring or two. Hopefully its nothing toooo major. I think we'll pull off that cover tomorow sometime and take a peak.

John managed to get me abit worried when he said I might of spun a lobe off the cam I sure hope thats not true

Rut roh.

My GTA got to be such a pain in the *** that I couldn't even stand to look at it anymore. It has a new owner now and he's thrilled with it. Anyway, I hope you didn't damage the cam.

What kind of I-pipe did you get?

Broken valve springs are never a good thing. hopefully no cam damage and its an easy fix. i still cant believe you put a hole in the I-Pipe. no wonder it was so loud....

git it done so we can line'm up at GB in the next couple of weeks.

I am really hoping so too. I cant aford to rebuild the friggen motor right now. If the cam's screwed I'll just have to try and find a cheap used flat tappet someplace.

I got a dynomax ultra something or other. It was the only true 3" they carried, the rest were all 2 3/4" and 2 7/8".
The old I pipe was the Dynomax turbo cat back setup and we measured it, 2 3/4" so I am hoping to get abit more umf with the larger exhaust.

I've got a .455/.455 hydraulic flat tappet you can have for free if you end up needing a cam.... it's on the small side, but better than nothing.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to try and find a used L98 or LT1 cam and keep the roller lifters? Can you run a flat tappet cam with roller lifters? If not, you'll need to get a set of lifters for the cam unless jay has kept the old lifters with the cam.

yea you have to use a roller cam and they only cost about 3 times as much But they are worth some significant hp/tq. I know Jay didn't use roller lifters in his new motor so he may still have them.

Just to join in on the theme of the topic of this thread I must say I've been having fun hooking up my Hedman shorties and y-pipe that dont seem to fit anywhere properly(headers actually fit good) and must say the y-pipe is complete crap. 3" at the collectors and goes right down to 2 1/4"... wtf is that crap good for? 250hp? probably. Even at the joint of the y it only goes up to 2 1/2" and then 3" if you use the adapter. Talk about decieving! As far as I'm concerned now only Hooker and SLP(which I'm only going on by pictures) make anything worth looking at if you want any kinda serious performance and good fabrication. I'll be going full length headers into 3" oval tubing as far back as possible on the car in the near future.

I got 1 3/4 SLP dual cat headers and can attest that they fit and work good. Tom has the hooker long tube's and he had some install isue's but other then that they seem to fit and look good.

The block is Flat tappet and I cant aford a retro rollor cam for it so it'll have to stay a flat tappet I got me 2 spare L98 cam's here if they would of worked.

Got the pass side valve cover off the car today, springs all look good so not sure were the rattle was comming from. I tried pushing down on them all and they all seemed fine.

It's looking more and more like a cam lobe

I just read this today, not good news since I am running an XE cam https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=251612

Did manage to break that mushroom looking thing that has the 2 coolent lines going through it and a 3rd cooant line going into the throttle body. Not sure what its called, but anyone got a spare one???

Its a heat diverter valve and its best to buy new. If they puke from being old/brittle they can leave you stranded. If you need one I have one you can have but it will have to be shipped...

this is part of the reason i use hedman long tubes and true duals with an h-pipe.

I did save the lifters from that cam and marked the bores they came out of. Just let me know if you want it... I put the cam and lifters into a plastic bag about a year ago.

I work 9-5ish most days.. I'm thinking about going to GB with Brad on Wednesday if you wanna meet us there... if not we'll figure something out. You are going to tear your shortblock apart and get those filings out... or at the very least replace your oil and filter a few times.

Yea, what time are you going to be down? I'll pm you a couple numbers you can get ahold of me at. I'm joining your depression as I'm pretty sure I broke something when I was breaking in my motor a couple days ago Have to drain the oil today and see whats in the filter. I heard a ding after ~15mins of breakin and a bit of a rattle which sounded like it was from within the motor. She still ran but I shut her off 5secs later... was soo worried I didn't think to look at oil pressure after that moment but she was at 30psi using 10w30 which seems pretty damn low to me.

I'll be there if there is no rain... if for some reason I can't make it out I will send the cam & lifters out with Brad. Keep an eye on the board tomorrow and I will post if something changes.

The cam is by "Engine Parts One - Ertel Canada". It's approximately .455/.455 lift and unknown duration. If you are going to Atchison's they can spec it out for you... or I can show you how to measure it if you really want to know. It was from my old 355 which consistantly ran 13.9/14.0 with:

-Cast Iron LG4 Intake
-World Products S/R heads
-Stock Q-Jet carb
-Stock stall converter & 3.23 rear gears

There was no lope so I think the duration was fairly tight... should work real nice with TPI.

Sounds good... I'm going to be heading up to the GTA on Sunday afternoon... but I already have a pretty full schedule... Where exactly is Arthur? If you could meet me somewhere close to the 401 on Sunday I can drop it off for you.

I measured the cam... it's .450/.450 and approximately 210 degrees duration @.050..... definitely on the small side, but it should work fine until you get something else. I guess you can test the theory about overcamming...

The cam wasnt a small base circle cam, I am speculateing here, but I am thinking my rod jurnals weren't clear and they smacked the cam in two spots breaking it in three.

Gotta love the headaches of a stroker eh ? I guess a small base circle cam is gunna be in order now.

Did it atleast break cleanly or could there be missing peieces of it in the motor?

The small base circle issue sucks. I'm lucky, the only right thing the cracker did was make enough clearance for a regular cam. Also thanks to the machine shop as well I guess.

Holy crap man! What kind of rods/bolts are you running on that unit? I never even thought to mention clearance issues.... I was under the impression that you were already running a comp XE274H which is much bigger with no problems. Even still... if you have ARP bolts and aftermarket rods it should still clear.

I had to do some really minor clearancing for my stock LT1 rods/bolts and Comp XE284H....
