Lets say good bye to the front plate!

I'm not usually one for these kinds of things but this is one I can get behind. I dont really see any downside to this at all

Re: Lets say good bye to the front plate!

"Honourable Donna Cansfield
Minister of Transportation
M.P.P. Etobicoke Centre

We, the Undersigned, petition the Province of Ontario to revoke the current law requiring the display of a front license plate on passenger vehicles. We believe that there are significant benefits in not requiring front license plates and our reasons for this belief are briefly summarized in the paragraphs below.

Firstly, eliminating the need for a front license plate will significantly reduce the Province's costs associated with production, storage, and accounting for the additional plate. In 2004 the province of Saskatchewan joined five other provinces who no longer require a front license plate - reportedly saving the government $370 000 per year, while helping to reduce insurance costs. See http://www.gov.sk.ca/news?news...

Secondly, the front license plate negatively affects the efficiency of the vehicle by interrupting the aerodynamics with the plate at the vehicle's primary point of attack. Further, many vehicles suffer further losses in efficiency with the front plate's blockage of large portions of the front air-intake of the vehicle, resulting in increased fuel consumption, and increased greenhouse emissions.

Thirdly, unnecessary damage is sustained from minor bumper-to-bumper collisions, resulting from the front plate mounting brackets and bolts on passenger cars, which cause cracks and abrasions to the rear bumpers of the cars that they hit, which would otherwise be absorbed.

Alberta, Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and the three territories use single license plates. With Ontario's population greater than 10x that of Manitoba, the demonstrated tax savings for the Province would be millions of dollars per year, every year. In light of the cost savings for the Province, cutting greenhouse emissions, and other positive effects, we are asking that this law be repealed.

Sincerely, "

Although I like the thought of it.....

$370,000 in savings is chumpchange compared to the other monies governments spend on frivilous items.....

A front plate affecting "aerodynamics"? Hardly, maybe on the nascar circuit. We're talking about our local streets and highways.

"Increased fuel consumption and greenhouse gases?" Minimal if any. Probably a fraction of a percentage point compared to the gases emited from big business.

"Damage to bumpers??" Maybe car manufactureres should start designing "real" bumpers, kind od like the ones they did way back in the day. You can virtually poke your finger in any new car bumper nowadays. Again, hardly an issue.

Besides, I paid large for my custom plates. I kinda like 'em. And don't mind showing them off on my front end.

And law inforcement getting a front plate # only of someone in the act of a crime (i.e hit and run drunk driver)........priceless.

Sorry, I don't see the point in this one.

Re: Lets say good bye to the front plate!

Then dont sign it.

I would personally love to sign one. i have both a quebec plated car and 3 ontario plated vehicles, i hate the front plat on all three. Lumina van 96, 93 saturn sw2 i think, and ofcourse my bird. All three are very aerodynamically designed, and it just ruins the front fascia to mount a plate on there. I dont even see how it can be done on the saturn, the front is all an edge, and the lower spoiler is way to flimsy to be attaching anything. It would have to be done facing UP or something, or some sort of a bracket made.

I can think of 2 reasons why they wouldnt do it.

#1) The city of ottawa hurt alot this year, cuz the winter was so warm. The canal was barely open, and the tourism suffered ALOT. Ottaw is a very government town, with its biggest economy driver being construction, and tourism. Because of this, i beleive alot of people who wouldnt normally get tickets, got tickets for alot of stupid reasons. Ive never gotten a parking ticket or speeding ticket or any ticket in my life. This year and near the end of last year, i got 3. (ive been driving for 4 years). Amending this rule would only be one more reason why they wont make money.

#2) They have alot of regulations in place, that would require change in order to implement the no front plate. Which may not end up saving them any money at all. ie: Speed cameras, or those cameras that tell them uve raced a red, the rules for having a sticker and whatever it implies to be getting rid of a pair of plates, etc etc etc.... ie: they are probably too lazy to figure it out and change.

BUT im signing it.

My 91 GTA looks so much better without a front plate. Unfortunately, there are 8 holes in the bumper.

Since when is it ILLEGAL to put your front plate on in states or provinces where it is legal not to put it on? Just because we want it legal to go without doesn't not mean you have too. You wanna wear yours? Go ahead no ones saying you have to stop

Aerodynamics start playing a MAJOR role once speeds exceed 80kmh. If you save .05% drag coefficient ( I'll bet is more ) by removing your front plate and multiply that over the millions of vehicle trips over the highways in Ontario each day it would add up to substantial amounts of reduction. A hell of a lot more than that stupid windmill at CNE reduces I'd be willing to bet my own dollars on that one and look what that thing cost.

Big business may pollute more but does that mean we shouldn't do what we can?

As for $370,000 chump change? Eeeks man... Thats over four school teachers salaries or another doctor in a hospital. Trim that amount off every mundane stupid program out there ( like the front plates) as I am sure there are thousands of redundant wasteful places yet to be considered to save.

Heres how it is. When does anyone go bankrupt from their mortgage payments? NEVER its all the five bucks here and cel phone this and cable tv that and eating out and Visa card debt that kills them not the mortgage.

As my Scottish Grandpa used to say..

Mind the pennies and the pounds take care themselves

This is LOOOOOOONG overdue. Lose the front plate LAW and allow us the choice

I can't think of a more fitting metaphor for that stupid place and the socialist dickweeds who run it.

Re: Lets say good bye to the front plate!

We've been trying in BC for years with minimal success. The two primary reason (cited by the police are):

1) Easy identification for reasons noted above. But, motorcycles don't have any front plates and that doesn't seem to be a bother.

2) The police are using Laser more often and on some cars (say a Black 91-92 GTA with it's smooth, chromeless frontend with hidden-headlights) the front plate is the only thing they can really get a good fix on.

I know very much about point two because I had a Radar/Laser Detector and I was able to "beat" the Laser; so they busted me for no front plate.

Good luck.
