Finally! 86 TPI ALDL connection. Frustrating, though.
This is my first post. I searched throught the forums and learned everything I could about connecting my Laptop to my newly acquired 86 Iroc - Z Camaro in just 48 hours. It was frustrating but well worth it. I even reported myself sick to work for two days and went to bed at 2:00am for two nights in a row. but finally managed to get data to WinALDL making my own adapter. Now I have lots of questions, maybe someone can help me with what you can.
Specs: 1986 TPI Camaro Iroc Z w/ 305 stock engine w/ about 145K miles. The only mods to this engine is a set of Hooker headers. The ECM says 16198259.
For those doing searches, this ECM is the one commonly known as "165". The connector I made is the first of the two shown in this page: http://w1.601.telia.com/~u60113744/s.../aldlcable.htm I'm using WinALDL software. You can find it here: http://winaldl.webhop.net/
Now for my questions:
1) I was able to connect at 160 bauds through the E pin on my car's ALDL connector. The M pin is empty. Can the E pin transmit at 8192 bauds as well? Or is this only for the ECMs that have the M pin?
2) Why are the MAF sensor readings fluctuating between 8.03 and 7.88 if I have the MAF disconnected?
3) What are the different $6E, $32B, $XX I keep reading about? Are these .bin files to burn into chips?
4) Why does it start really rough in cold mornings, but starts perfectly well if I disconnect the MAF? What should I look for in the captured data?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Also, if I can provide with any help just ask.

Hey Blazer,
I have been working for the past six hours or so trying to get the ALDL connection working on my '86 TPI. It worked just fine on my friends '94 Z28 a few minutes ago, but I am having the hardest time getting it to do anything with the '86. The cable I am using is the MAX232 style that is powered from the computers serial port, and has a seperate lead with a 10k resister build into the cable for ECM's like the 165 that need it it can be found here. I checked it on my digital voltmeter to ground and it is at 10k, but I didn't trust it so I went and bought a pack of 10k resistors from radio shack to no avail. I was curious what you ended up doing to convince your '86 into giving up its secrets.

I used the first of the two diagrams shown here: http://w1.601.telia.com/~u60113744/...l/aldlcable.htm
The Max232 connector never worked.
The I downloaded WinALDL. I could only connect at 160bauds, though.
That was it. Good luck.

winaldl is nice, but ecm852 from craig moates is a tad better. I like it cause its a bit easier to understand.
