Starting problem
Okay, I tried starting my car and it just turns over but won't start. I checked to see it there was a spark and there is, so I figure its not getting any fuel so the fuel pump is gone. But is there anything else it may be, if anyone has any ideas please reply.
Thanks!
Thanks!

By the way I had it started before (bout last week) and i had to keep giving it gas or it would die, thought this might have to do with the fuel pump or filter being clogged or something. I thought it may be the timing not set corrected but don't know. But not it won't start at all so could it still have something to do with the timing?

Do you hear the fuel pump priming for about two seconds when you turn the key. It could be the fuel pump relay or the FP/INJ2 fuse burned out possibly.

I do hear the pump, where is the FP/INJ2 fuse located? Is it one the relays located under the hood?

The FP/inj2 fuse is located on the fuse block under the dash. The fuel pump relay is mounted on a bracket on the driver side firewall. It is a rectangular shaped unit next to two oval shaped units. What kind of fuel pressure do you have at the rail. If you hear the pump priming when you turn the key, it isn't the relay or the fuse. Have you checked the injectors and their fuses, connectors, and wiring?

When you says "Have you checked the injectors and their fuses" are you talking about the fuse under the dash or are there other fuses for the injectors too? Do you think it may be the fuel filter (Don't know when it was changed last), because I said before I had it started, but had to keep giving it gas to stay started but now theres nothing just turns over.

Fuel Pump Fuse
There is also a 20A fuse located in the engine compartment by the battery. It is attached to the passenger side inner fender panel. It kinda of looks like a relay, but is just a weatherpack connector/fuse holder. If memory serves me right, it should have an orange wire and I think a black wire running to it. If this fuse is blown your car will turn over but not start.
You can also check the fuel pump by applying 12V to the bottom left terminal on the ALDL port. If the pump is good you will hear it running (do not try to start the car while doing this).

SES light?
When you get your car running and when you are applying gas, does it stumble? Is there an SES light? Any knocking and pinging when you apply gas to keep it running?
I have a few suggestions, but I need answers first.
Actually, I would suggest your MAF but if I'm not mistaken, '89 third gens were SD, so scratch the idea that your MAF is bad. If you have SES lights, flash the codes and see what you come up with.

The Speed Density was only on the 5.0 TBI that year and he hears the fuel pump prime so the 20 AMP fuse is not the problem.

My 87 GTA was having the sa,e problem.. it happened right after i put gas in... I had to call the tow truck.. took the car home and the second the tow truck set the car down i reached in and it started right up... till this day i still dont know what it was..
But my car has to run for like 2 minutes before i go anywhere to let it warm up, or it will bog out the second i hit the gas.
the ses is reading coolant temp sensor..
very cheap part, just hard to get to on the TPI

I really don't know what the real problem was. I added some fuel injector cleaner in to clean the injectors and added new spark plugs. After that i started it up and was still dying on me but I kept giving it gas and then finally I was able to get it to keep an idle. maybe the fuel injectors were too dirty but still don't know if that was the problem.

I have had the same problem where I have to give it gas if not it will die. I can hear the pump and the engine runs fine without any weird noises. This problem is hard to diagnose since it only happens once every month or two. This can happen when I turn my car on for the first during that day or sometimes when I've been driving around and then turn the ignition off. I've replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs. What can it be?

well mine cars runs good now:lala:, Have you had your injectors changed at all? If not try putting some fuel injector cleaner in, it may solve the problem. I think that could of been my problem because after I gaving it gas it may of clean them.
