HORRIBLE gas mileage 110 miles to the tank?!?!

got my car back from the shop and now im getting hoooorible gas milage, they put a new distributor in, could this just be a case of bad timing that would give me this bad of gas mileage? before i had repairs done on it i was getting 220 to 250 with it. oh and i also had to replace the mass airflow sensor and i put a K & N air filter on ... could this be a airflow problem?... Ive got a timing light im tinking of checking it out in the morning but id like a few ideas from every on here.. every one here seems to know better then most mechanics in this town!

TO cut your mileage in half the timing would literally have to be so far out that your car more than likley wouldnt run :-)

As far as what u have done, go back over the stuff you have already replaced. If no trouble codes check all the basics out.

U have coolant sensors and the like as well as replacement MAFs that can be on the bad side of things yet not far enough out to flag codes yet still be technically "wrong".

Get a scan tool and chec things out like coolant temp, tps and maf readings and make sure everything jives.

Injectors could be shot too. Try ohming them out, should be around 17 ohms on all of them if they are stockers.

U did set the timing with the EST disconnected correct?

later

The oil from the K&N filter can faul the MAF wire.
I had all sorts of problems with my K&N equiped Formula, went back to plain old paper filter, everything's fine so far...!

Then you put too much oil on it

Check your 02 sensor, EGR, and MAF Relays, those can harm your mileage a ton.

I didn't put any oil on it, the filter was factory pre-oiled....
Even a very small amount of oil can harm the maf wire is my experience...!!

Actually I bet 10-15 too little everywhere, or just the bypass wire disconnected would about cut it in half. The power would be terrible, and quite noticable.

Did you find the problem??? Did it drive fine, and still have the problem?

My '87 LB9 ran like this (rich) - had a code 32, replaced MAF sensor, ran much better.

my '86 t/a got gas milage almost just like that. i found out that i had 5 bad injectors. when i ohm'd them they came out fine. when i pulled them out though, i found that the tips on them were cracked. if you ohm the injectors and they turn out fine, try this.

with the car running, disconnect each injector wire one at a time. if you notice a difference in the way the car idles that injector is good. if there is no difference, that injector is bad. make sure to reconnect each wire after you check it.

good luck

Is your car coming up to temp? If not, you're probably running rich until it hits the closed-loop temp (150*-ish). This could be from a faulty thermostat that failed in the OPEN position (I know that's weird.....) or maybe the thermo was removed. Just thinking outside the box.
