tpi gurus, please read. few ?

please help me with the following:
what i have: '87 iroc with jasper class 1 350, stock 305 tpi stuff, possibly including the knock sensor.

1. swapping in a serp set-up (thanks hawks!). if ever i need to order parts i.e. alternator, etc, what yr would i ask for, '88?

2. want to clean the brackets and pulleys before install. thinking sandblasting. other/ better options?

3. the motor has always had knock after anything better than about 3/4 throttle. my guess is that the shop put a 305 knock sensor back in. after verifying / changing that, i intend to have a prom programmed to better use the 305 injectors w/ the 350. i really don't have the $ for injectors right now. i will also be deleting the egr at the same time. any other suggestions about what could be causing the spark knock?

4. knowing the above, would an afpr help me out in the meantime? if so, brand suggestions and setting suggestions please.

5. welcome back tgo! my life can normallize again!

thnx in advance. all help appreciated. p.s.- will be daily driven, for a while anyway

Not a guru yet,

1.) any year that had them available for serp will work.
I love changing my answer each time to "what car is this going on?" Uhhh, let's make it a Camaro today... No, wait its a Pontiac!
2.) Powder coating holds up better. Good option with lots of places doing it now.
3.) Probably too much timing or not enough fuel.
Get the correct knock sensor for the 350.
Should be GM # 10456549
4.) might help to raise the pressure. It is a "patch" until you can get a chip done correctly. Look into the DIY-PROM board. You won't regret learning how to do it yourself.
EGR will help the detonation by lowering the chamber temp. Read up on that before blindly removing it on a daily driver that gets romped on. (IMO of course)
5.) HTH

thanks jp. i disassembled the pulleys from the brackets and took everything to a powdercoater today. $225 to get everything done. add into that the cost of conversion pieces from hawks- $250- and i sure got a better deal than what gm is wanting for a brand new serp conversion, which is $1,000 plus. the guy said it would look better than new and i would be well pleased with it.

Hope you got a water pump with the deal since it will now be going the wrong way with the serp.
Powder coat holds up much better than paint. Wish I did that to my brackets.

hawks was great and included EVERYTHING, except perhaps a couple of the bolts- not a prob. water pump was included, but i'm opting for a stewart stage 2 pump while everything else is being replaced

i know they will be too much for probably a mild 350 but would support mods later down the road...

if you are having a chip burnt shortly, pick yourself up some stock ls1 injectors. you can get a set of 8 for less than 100 bucks some times in good shape. just need to have the PROM burnt for like 28lb injecotrs i believe.
